New York, New York - The BMCC men's basketball was defeated 82-64 by Monroe-Bronx in Region 15 action on Tuesday night at BMCC Gymnasium. The Panthers fall to 6-11 (6-5 Region XV) with the loss, while victory moves the Express to 10-8 (4-3 Region XV).
The Panthers had three or more players score in double figures for the second straight game, with three of five starters registering double-digit scoring efforts. Sophomore
Ysaia Marte (Bronx, New York) and freshman
Khalil Black (Queens, New York) led all scorers with a game-high tied 16 points, with
Black also knocking a game-best tied three treys on the evening. Sophomore
Jayden Jarrett (Bronx, New York) chipped in with 15 points and missed a second straight double-double by two rebounds with a team-high eight on the night.
The Panthers spread the wealth again on the hardwood, distributing double-digit assists the third straight game and 15th time this season with 12 helpers in the contest as freshman
Ja'Lyn Griffin (Ithaca, New York) dished out a team-best three assists. Classmate
Kimmeo Dixson (Bronx, New York) joined
Marte and
Jarrett with two assists on the night.
Marte also led the Panthers defensively with a team-high three steals and
moved into third all-time in program history with 91 career steals, surpassing
Igor Borukhov's total of 90 career steals from 2003-2005.
After both teams traded the first four points, the Express used an 8-2 run to get out to an early 10-4 lead on a Steven McGriff jumper at 15:21. The Panthers would roar back in the first half that saw their visitors shoot 62.5 percent from the field (15–for-24) with an 8-2 run to tie it up at 12 on a
Jarrett layup at 11:19 but Monroe-Bronx would take control the rest of the way using a 16-5 run over the next five and half minutes to get their lead to double digits 28-17 at the 5:46 mark on a layin. BMCC scored nine of the following 13 points to get the deficit down to six, 32-26, on a
Black three-pointer, and after a Young layup got the lead to 10, 38-28, with 52 seconds left for the Express, the Panthers scored the final three points of the quarter - a
Marte layup and
Jarrett 1-for-2 at the line - to cut the deficit to seven, 38-31 as both teams went into the locker room at halftime.
BMCC got out to a strong start in the second half with six of the first eight points to get the deficit down to three, 40-37 at 18:52 on a
Black three-pointer before Monroe-Bronx pulled away with an 11-2 run, holding the Panthers to 1-for-7 from the field for 4:43 to get their lead back to double-digits 12, 51-39 at 14:09 on a Vashaun Wallace layup. The Express would cruise from there on out, building their lead to its largest of the night 23, 79-56, when Timothy Charles went 1-for-2 at the line and rolled to an 82-64 win.
Abubakar Kromah and Steven McGriff led the way for the Express offensively, dropped a game-best tied 16 points with McGriff's 16 coming off the bench while Jovan Young chipped in with 13 points in the contest. Vashaun Wallace distributed a game-high four assists, and Jevonte Valerie, Derrick Simpson, and Young snagged a team-best two steals, while Rene Williams recorded a game-high two blocks.
