BMCC Men’s Soccer Edged 1-0 By Suffolk County Community College At Home

New York, New York – The BMCC Men's Soccer team put forth a strong effort and played step for step with No. 6 nationally ranked Suffolk Community College on a damp Thursday night at Pier 40 in downtown Manhattan. However, the second half would bite the Panthers again as a late second-half goal off a corner in the 75th minute helped the Sharks escape with a 1-0 victory. The loss drops the Panthers to 3-4 (3-4 Region 15) while the Sharks improve to 12-1 (7-1 Region XV).

The Sharks jumped all over the Panthers in the first half, outshooting them 10-0 in the first half, with their best chance coming on a 20-yard blast by Kaanturk Akgul that just went wide of the next. Despite not registering a shot, BMCC held up on the backend to keep it scoreless at the halfway point.

Suffolk Community College continued to keep the heat on in the second half, dominating the Corners 10-2 overall, getting the game-winning goal in the 75th minute on one of the six they had when Mario Salguero sent a beautifully placed cross into the darkness of the goalie box and on the head of Cristian Parra Alvar for the game's first goal to make it 1-0.

The Panthers would not go away, pushing for the equalizer and almost tying it on a breakaway, but freshman Niklas Filippi's (New York, New York) low left-footed blast just missed the low left pocket of the net. In the 89 minute, on their second corner kick, the Panthers had one more chance to tie it up but could not convert as the Sharks came away with the 1-0 victory.

Chris Ascencio got his seventh victory of the year, picking up the clean sheet, while sophomore Abdul Mumin Seidu (Bronx, New York) was huge in net for the Panthers, keeping them in the contest all night, making a game-high five saves.

The Panthers look to regain their winning touch as they head on the road in CUNYAC action to take on Kingsborough Community College at Kingsborough Athletics Field in Brooklyn, New York, on Saturday, September 30. For more information, visit the BMCC Men's Soccer Schedule.
