New York, New York – The BMCC men's soccer team suffered their first defeat of the 2023 season on Tuesday afternoon, 6-1, to CUNYAC opponent Queensborough Community College at home in Bayside, New York. The match was a home game but not at the normal confines of Pier 40, and the loss dropped the Panthers record to 3-1-0 (1-1-0 CUNYAC) while the Tigers moved to 2-2-1 (1-0-0 CUNYAC) with the victory.
BMCC entered the match with three straight shutouts, dominating their opponents in the first half. However, the story of this contest followed a different script.
After an excellent right-footed opportunity from freshman
Niklas Filippi (New York, New York) just sailed over the crossbar, Queensborough Community College got to work with Christopher Maldonado cashing in on a Panthers turnover with a blast into the top right pocket in the 15th minute to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Queensborough would add to their lead in the 27th minute when he sent one into the box off the foot of William Serrano to make it 2-0. Jefferson Cubias buried the third marker in the 41st minute from Maldonado again to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead going into the halftime break.
Queensborough Community College held BMCC to just three first-half shots, outshooting them 5-3 and 11-9 overall in the match.
The Tigers kept their foot on the gas in the second half as Adan Montiel added their fourth goal from Gamial Jean-Rene in the 50th minute to make it 4-0. Jean-Rene notched his first of the match in the 70th minute to increase the lead to 5-0 on Maldonado's third assist of the match. Maldonado would score his second in the 74th minute to make it 6-0, and then BMCC finally would get on the scoreboard in the 80th minute as Abdoulaye Diawara would bury one on a cross from Filippi to get it to 6-1. The result remained to the final whistle, with Queensborough taking a major CUNYAC victory.
Anthony Bardales
picked up the victory and joined Avinash Ramkumar with one save apiece. Freshman Yahir Ramirez (Brooklyn, New York) took the loss for the Panthers.
BMCC looks to return to their winning ways this Saturday, September 23, against Region 15 opponent Ulster Community College at 1 p.m. For more information, visit the
