BMCC Baseball Drops CUNYAC Doubleheader To Kingsborough C.C. At Home

Brooklyn, New York – The BMCC Baseball team dropped both contests during their second doubleheader of the season in CUNYAC action at home to NJCAA Division III No. 11 nationally ranked Kingsborough Community College 11-6 and 15-1 Friday afternoon at Kingsborough Athletics Field. The Waves extended their winning streak to 16 with the two victories improving to 19-3 (12-0 CUNYAC), while the two losses dropped the Panthers to 2-8 (2-6 CUNYAC).

Game 1 – Kingsborough Community College 11, Borough of Manhattan 6
Freshman starter Peter Marino (New York, New York) got off to a great start on the hill for the Panthers, retiring six of the first seven Kingsborough Community College batters he faced through the first two innings. After the Panthers left two men on base in the bottom of the second, Kingsborough was able to open the scoring with four runs in the third inning as Aldo Thomas recorded an RBI to open the scoring on a ground out. Then the Wave added three more runs with two outs as two of them came on an error and one more on a Jonathon Fonseca RBI single to make it 4-0 going into the bottom of the third. The Wave put it away with two more runs in the top of the fourth and four more in the top of the sixth to stretch the lead to 10-0 as Thomas picked up another RBI on a groundout to second. Another run came across before Nick Piazza unloaded a two-run homer that the wind carried over the right field fence, and Yoskar Guzman and Anthony Parker recorded an RBI on a single and sacrifice fly.

The Panther's bats finally got hot in the bottom of the sixth and seventh as they rallied to keep the game alive. Sophomore Maxwell Jimenez (Dominican Republic) and freshman Adonis Suarez (Queens, New York) connected for singles in the sixth, with Suarez bringing Marino home and sophomore Gerardo Galan Berihuete (Brooklyn, New York) manufacturing the other run in the inning on an RBI double to left field, cutting the lead down to 10-2. After the Wave added one more run in the top of the seventh, the Panthers registered four in the bottom of the inning as freshman Nicholas Mattera (Moorpark, California) ripped a double to left field. Marino would drill an RBI single to center field and then score on a wild pitch after a pitch hit Suarez to get the lead down to 11-5 before Berihuete picked up another RBI on a sacrifice fly to get BMCC within five, 11-6. However, the Panthers wouldn't get any closer as sophomore Frank Reyes (Brooklyn, New York) grounded into a fielders choice, and freshman Peter Rodriguez Reyes (Bronx, New York) was putout advancing to second, solidifying an 11-6 victory for Kingsborough.

The Panthers put up eight hits in the first game, with Mattera and Jimenez recording multi-hit games, with Mattera recording his third of the season and Jimenez his first of the season. Berihute, MarinoSuarez, and sophomore Abdel Raheem Dolah (Brooklyn, New York) all had one hit each, while Suarez and Berihute drove in a team-best two runs apiece and Marino stole a base.

Mattera was monstrous in the field with a career and team-high six putouts.

Frank Cullen picked up his second win of the season with a strong outing pitching five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and allowing three hits.

Marino took the loss for the Panthers, going two and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on five hits, striking out one, and walking one. Jimenez came out of the bullpen to pitch four innings allowing seven runs on seven hits with a strikeout and a walk.

Game 2 – Kingsborough Community College 15, Borough of Manhattan 1
Kingsborough Community College put up big innings in the top of the first and third with five runs while adding another in the top of the second to build their lead to 11-0 before the Panthers got their only run of the game on freshman Nicholas Mattera's (Moorpark, California) RBI single then cruised the rest of the way to a 15-1 victory.

Andrew Ardito earned his second victory of the season, allowing one run on three hits over three innings, striking out one and walking zero.

Freshman Conall Moore (New York, New York) took the loss for the Panthers, going three and a third innings, allowing 12 runs on ten hits, and striking out one in the first start of his collegiate career.

Underclassmen Peter Marino (New York, New York), Adonis Suarez (Queens, New York), and sophomore Abdel Raheem Dolah (Brooklyn, New York) joined Mattera with one hit apiece in the game.

Mattera turned in another strong performance in the field tying a career and game-high six putouts.
