Bellerose, New York – The BMCC Baseball team lost to Suffolk Community College 17-6 in Region 15 competition at Padavan-Preller Complex on Friday afternoon. The victory improves the Sharks to 9-7 (8-2 Region XV), while the loss drops the Panthers to 2-12 (2-10 Region XV).
Freshman Adonis Suarez (Queens, New York) posted his second multi-hit game of the season, leading the Panthers with two hits on the afternoon, while sophomore Abdel Raheem Dolah (Brooklyn, New York) drove in a team-best three runs. Freshman Nicholas Mattera (Moorpark, California) scored a team-high three runs and joined classmate Luis Ramirez (Brooklyn, New York) and sophomore Gerardo Galan Berihuete (Brooklyn, New York) and Dolah with one hit apiece.
Berihuete was stellar in the field for the Panthers, registering a team-best six putouts, while freshman Christian Hill (Bronx, New York) posted a career-best five putouts. Classmate Suarez recorded four putouts, and fellow underclassman Mattera and Ramirez had three putouts apiece.
Suffolk jumped out to an 8-0 lead grabbing two runs in the top of the first and third on a two-run triple by Dioscar Cuello and Dominic LaFroscia RBI triple and an RBI ground out by Stephen Lumme, then scoring three in the top of the fourth on an AJ Walker three-run homer. The Panthers would finally get on the board with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 8-2. After three straight walks from Adrian Beckles (Bronx, New York), Mattera, and Jeffrey Roldan (New York, New York), Dolah ripped an RBI single on a 2-0 count to score Beckles for the Panther's first run. Sophomore Maxwell Jimenez (Dominican Republic) drove in the second Panther run on the afternoon, picking up an RBI on a ground out to third, scoring Mattera.
The Sharks put the game away with a five-run inning in the top of the sixth on a LaFroscia two-run double, Lumme Sacrifice Fly RBI, Lucas Quinlan RBI Single, and a Joshua Riquelme RBI on a ground out to stretch the lead to 13-2. BMCC got three runs in the bottom of the inning as Roldan picked up an RBI when a run was walked in, then Dolah reached on an error at third before Mattera scored on a throwing error by the pitcher. Dolah would pick up his third RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth, but Suffolk would take the game 17-6.
Cuello got the win for Suffolk Community College, holding the Panthers hitless and allowing one run while striking out three. Roldan took the loss for the Panthers, allowing eight hits and eight runs over five innings while tying a career-best with five strikeouts.
