New York, New York – Hostos Community College exploded for 63 second-half points, shooting 63.3-percent from the field (19-for-30) and breaking open a 42-42 tie midway in the second half to power past BMCC men's basketball 88-69 in CUNYAC action on Thursday Night at BMCC Gymnasium. The Caimans improved to 7-5 (4-1 CUNYAC) with the victory, while the Panthers dropped to 4-6 (2-3 CUNYAC) with the loss.
Hostos shot 8-of-9 from three-point distance in the second half 88.9-percent and 10-for-20 overall, posting a 50-percent effort on the evening from long range. The Panthers buried eight three-pointers in the contest, tying a season-best. BMCC shot 41.4-percent on the game (29-for-70) including 48-percent from the field in the second half.
Three Panthers recorded double-digit scoring efforts on the night, with freshman
Khalil Black (Queens, New York) carrying the torch for the second straight game and fourth time this season with a team-high 20 points, 8-for-22 shooting from the field, and three treys.
Black registered his second 20-point game of the season while classmate
Ja'Lyn Griffin (Ithaca, New York) put up a career-high 15 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field, and sophomore
Jayden Jarrett (Bronx, New York) contributed 14 points in the contest.
Griffin dished out a game-best tied six assists and hauled town a career and team-best eight boards.
Freshman
Isah Mohammed (Lagos, Nigeria) turned away a game-high four shots while hauling down nine rebounds in the contest, while sophomore
Ysaia Marte (Bronx, New York) and
Black snatched a team-best two steals.
BMCC dished out 14 assists for their third straight double-digit assist effort and ninth of the season while combining for six blocks in the contest.
Hostos Community College got out of the gate quickly, registering eight of the first ten points, capped off by TeAmo Ebron's three-point play after he laid it up off balanced through traffic at 14:10 and converted a free throw after to make it 8-2. BMCC would rally right back with a 9-1 run with a Black layup at 11:37, giving the Panthers their first lead at 11:37.
After the Caimans tied it up three times at 11 on a Justice Carrington layup at 9:52, 13 on a layup by Nyhem Garrett at 8:56, and at 16 on a trey from Evan Douglas Vasquez at the 7:30 mark before the Panthers exploded for an 11-2 run to stretch their lead nine points their largest of the night 27-18 on a three-pointer from
Dontate Creedland (Brooklyn, New York) at the 4:48 mark. Hostos finished the period on a 7-2 run to cut the BMCC lead to four, 29-25, when Enron went 1-for-2 from the charity stripe with 23 seconds left at the halftime break.
The Panthers carried the momentum from their strong first-half finish into the second, building their lead back to eight, 38-30 at the 17:01 mark on a
Mohammed jumper at 17:01. The Caimans responded with a 10-0 run capped off by a Xavier Riullano three-pointer at the 15:15 mark to put Hostos back in front of 40-38.
Griffin helped BMCC score four of the following six points to tie it at 42 at the 15:00 mark. Hostos would take control from there, outscoring the Panthers 21-11 over the next seven and a half minutes to get their lead to double digits for the first time on the night 63-53 on a Justin Umunakwe three-pointer at 8:43. The Caimans
The Caimans stretched their lead to its largest on the night 19, 78-59 at 3:40 on a Myles Day layup and got it back there when the contest went final with an 88-69 Hostos victory.
Three Hostos Community College players finished the evening in double figures, and one posted a double-double as TeAmo Ebron was the Caiman's top scorer and rebounder with a game-high 22 points and 14 rebounds. Justin Umunakwe and Justice Carrington scored 15 and 13 points, respectively, while Ebron dished out a game-best tied six assists and had three steals, which was also game-high.

a team-best 59 assists,
with three or more helpers in nine of the Panther's ten contests and five or more in seven of his 10 games. Griffin is also seventh in the country in assists per game (5.9) and 11th nationally with total assists (59).

Khalil Black (Queens, New York) put together a solid week for the Panthers as their top scorer in both contests, averaging 19 points per game, five rebounds per game, and three steals per game.
