Women’s Basketball Drops Road Contest To Westchester Community College

New York, New York – The BMCC women's basketball team fell on the road to Westchester Community College 74-58 on Tuesday night at Viking Gymnasium in Valhalla, New York. The Panthers fell to 3-7 overall, while the Vikings improved to 5-6 with the victory.
 
Three Panthers scored in double figures on the night, with freshman Sheliyah Jackson (Bronx, New York) leading the way with a career and team-high 20 points and grabbed a team-best eight boards. Sophomore Emily Kennedy (Brooklyn, New York) posted her seventh straight double-double and team-best eighth of the season, handing out a career and game-high 10 assists and scoring 14 points. Kennedy also posted her 14th career double-double, while freshman Mariah Wigfall (New York, New York) also put up a career-high 10 points in the contest. 
 
Kennedy led the Panthers defensively with a team-high six steals and two blocks, while Wigfall snagged five steals in the contest.

BMCC forced 37 turnovers, tying for the second most this season, scoring 21 points off them, and scoring 12 fast break points.

The Vikings got a fast start in the opening quarter, scoring seven of the first nine points to lead 7-2 at 6:58 on a layup from Milagros Altson. The Panthers would respond with an 11-2 run over the next 5:30, with six of the 11 points coming from Wigfall, who tied it at nine with a jumper at 5:13, then stretched the BMCC lead to four, their largest of the night, 13-9, at the 1:55 mark. After Jania Simmons (Brooklyn, New York) got the Panthers lead back to four, 15-11, at 1:16 before Westchester scored the final three points to cut the Panther lead down to one, 15-14, with 18 seconds left and the score would stay that way after the first.
 
Westchester Community College scored seven straight points to begin the second quarter, getting the lead to 21-15 at the 7:58 mark on a Natasha White layup before the Panthers responded with five of the following seven points with two Stephany Coward (Queens, New York) free throws cutting the deficit to three, 23-20 at the 6:02 mark. The Vikings finished the second period on an 11-4 run to get their lead to its largest of the first half, 12, 34-22 on a White layup with 44 seconds left, and a Kennedy layup at the horn would cut it down to 10, 34-24 going into the halftime break.
 
The Panthers would cut the lead to single digits to start the third quarter at 9:49 on a Jackson layup to make it 34-26 but would not get any closer as the Vikings used a 12-4 run to lead by 16, 46-30 on a pair of Alston free throws and would keep their lead at double digits 54-44 going into the final stanza. The Vikings would continue to cruise, building their lead to its largest of the night, 18, with 52 seconds left, 74-56, and grab the victory 74-58.
 
Westchester Community College had three players register double digit scoring efforts on the night with Natasha White dropping a game-high 30 points while Milagros Altson scored 20 points and Baronique Russell posted a double double scoring 13 points and hauling down 16 rebounds. Chynna Mincey led all rebounders in the contest ripping down a game-best 17 rebounds and dishing out a team-best five assists while Altson ate up a game-best nine steals.

Notables –
Emily Kennedy (Brooklyn, New York) has put up double-digit scoring efforts in all nine games and 21 straight times dating back to the 2022-23 season and 22 double-figure games in her last 23 contests. Kennedy has also posted double-doubles in eight of her nine games this season, including 10 in her previous 11 games dating back to last year.
Kennedy ranks in the top ten nationally in three statistical categories, tying for third in the country in assists per game (5.7) and ranking fourth nationally in steals per game (5.1) and 10th in scoring average (19.6).
 - Kennedy is the Panthers top player leading the squad in 12 different categories in points (176), scoring average (19.6), field goals made (59), field goals attempted (142), free throws made (53), free throws attempted (90), rebounds (80), rebounding average (8.9), assists (51), assists per game (5.7), steals (46), and steals per game (5.1)
Kennedy moved into seventh all-time in career steals with 96, surpassing Karina Ortega's 91 career steals from 2016-2018. She has registered double-digit steals in two contests this season, with a career-best 12 steals in the Panthers opener against LaGuardia Community College
 - Kennedy also moved into 10th all-time in program history with 88 career assists, passing Evante Duffin's (Bronx, NY) mark of 86 career assists from 2011-12 while tying for 10th all-time in school history with 449 career points with Karina Ortega from 2016-2018. 
- Kennedy has a strong month of December to close out the 2023 portion of the schedule, posting three doubles and continuing her streak of seven straight doubles with a team-best eight on the year with 17 points per game, 8.3 rebounds per game, 6.7 assists per game, 6.7 steals per game average to go along with four blocks.

Sheliyah Jackson (Bronx, New York) leads the Panthers with five blocks and a field goal percentage of 52.7 percent while ranking second in six other categories in points (72), scoring average (9.0), (29) field goals made, free throws made (14), rebounds (60), and rebounding average (7.5). She is also second with three double-digit rebound games and two double-doubles on the year.
