Women’s Basketball Falls On The Road At Queensborough, Kennedy Posts Team-Leading Second Double-Double

Bayside, New York – On Tuesday night, the BMCC women's basketball team was defeated by Queensborough Community College 83-55 in CUNYAC action at RFK Gymnasium in Bayside, New York. The loss drops the Panthers to 1-2 (1-1 CUNYAC), while the Tigers move to .500 at 2-2 (1-0 CUNYAC).

Sophomore Emily Kennedy (Brooklyn, New York) posted her team-leading second double-double and the eighth of her career with a team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds while leading the Panthers defensively with five steals. Classmate Brynanh Sledge (Brooklyn, New York) registered a career-high 11 points, while freshman Stephany Coward (Queens, New York) and Kennedy dished out a team-best four assists each.

Coward's four assists were a new career high, and she also registered another with four steals. Freshman Jania Simmons (Brooklyn, New York) hauled down a career-high nine rebounds in the contest.

Kennedy has scored in double figures in nine of her last 11 games and has recorded doubles in two of her three games this season and four of her last five dating back to the 2022-23 season. She ranks in the top ten in the country in three statistical categories, tops nationally in steals per game (7.3), tied sixth in assists per game (6.0), and seventh in points per game (23.0). Last season, Kennedy ranked eighth nationally with a 19.5 points-per-game average.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair as after Queensbororugh built an 11-4 lead at the 5:40 mark, BMCC would go on an 8-1 run to tie it on 12 when Kennedy finished off a fastbreak courtesy of a steal from Coward. The game would stay tied three more times before a Nayla Walters layup with 33 seconds left gave the Tigers the lead after one 20-18. Queensborough would take control of the game from there, roaring out of the gate in the second quarter with an 11-2 run to get up by double digits for the first time on the night 11, 31-20 at the 7:55 mark on a layup then building the advantage to 21, 43-22 at the 2:49 the largest of the first half en route to a 46-27 halftime lead.

The Panthers would battle back, scoring nine of the first 13 points of the third quarter to get the deficit down to 14, 50-36 at 7:23 on a Perez layup, but wouldn't get any closer as the Tigers would lead 58-39 after three and outscore the Panthers 23-8 in the fourth quarter rolling to an 83-55 victory.

The Panthers will look to get back to .500 against NJCAA Division III No. 11 nationally ranked Monroe-Bronx on Thursday, November 16, at 6 p.m. at Monsignor Scanlan Gym in the Bronx, New York. For more information, visit the BMCC Women's Basketball Schedule Page.
