New York, New York – After the BMCC women's basketball team fought hard with Nassau Community College the entire first half on Saturday afternoon, the Lions pulled away in the second, defeating the Panthers 90-50 victory in Region 15 action. Nassau Community College improves to 2-0 (2-0 Region XV) while the Panthers drop to 1-1 (1-1 Region XV).
Sophomore
Emily Kennedy (Brooklyn, New York) spearheaded the Panthers offense with her second straight 20-point game and eighth of her career with a team-high 26 points, 20 of them in the first half. Kennedy also dished out a team-best seven assists and had another with four steals. Freshmen Sheliyah Jackson (Bronx, New York) recorded back-to-back double-digit rebounding games, hauling down a career-high 15 rebounds. Classmate
Jania Simmons (Brooklyn, New York) had a career-best eight points and three steals.
Kennedy has scored in double figures in eight of her last 10 games since last season. She ranks in the top ten in the country in three statistical categories: she is the top-ranked player in steals per game (8.0), second in assists per game (8.0), and tied for sixth in scoring average (26.0). Last season, Kennedy ranked eighth nationally with a 19.5 points-per-game average.
Jackson has also made national notice, ranking
seventh in the country in rebounding average with 13 rebounds per game mark.
After Nassau Community College led 27-16 after the first quarter, BMCC punched back, outscoring them 17-15 in the second quarter. The Lions would get their lead back to 11, 31-21, before the Panthers roared back with an 8-2 run with six points coming from
Kennedy and a jumper from freshman Kamella Ross (Bronx, New York) to cut the deficit down to four, 33-29. The Lions would score nine of the last 13 points to grab a 42-33 halftime lead.
The Lions pulled away early in the second half with a 13-2 run to lead by 20, 55-35, and by their largest lead by 25, 67-42 at the 1:42 mark to hold a 68-46 advantage after three. Nassau held the Panthers to just four points in the fourth, finishing up with a 90-50 victory.
The Panthers will look to rebound in CUNYAC action on Tuesday, November 14, at 5:30 p.m., when they play Queensborough Community College at RFK Gymnasium in Bayside, New York. For more information, visit the
