New York, New York – The BMCC men's soccer team, fresh off their league-best 14th Conference Championship, knew they faced another tall order on Thursday afternoon at Pier 40, defeating an extremely talented Kingsborough Community College squad that mowed through the CUNYAC regular season with one problem the Panthers got the best of them two times including the 2023 CUNYAC Community College Men's Soccer Championship. The third battle between the Panthers and the Wave provided the same drama in downtown Manhattan as the Kingsborough Community College scored two late second-half goals to crush BMCC 4-3 in the 2023 Region XV Quarterfinals.
The Panthers finish the season 9-5 overall, tripling their win total from a season ago and finishing 6-1 to end the season after a 3-4 start. BMCC picked up their sixth straight victory 3-2 in the
2023 CUNYAC Championship, rallying from down 1-0 at halftime to capture the
CUNYAC Title back-to-back for the first time since the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
After sophomore
Ademola Opesanwo (Lagos, Nigeria) thought he had opened the scoring in the fourth minute when his left-footed blast went off the inside of the right post and stayed out of the net, the Wave capitalized scoring the first goal in the fifth minute for the third straight time in the meeting between these two squads.
As they have done in this series, the Panthers responded later when freshman Jose Ramales Flores Jr. (Brooklyn, New York) uncorked a 20-yard blast into the top pocket of the net in the 27th minute, tying it at one apiece. Freshman Abdoul Sinare (Brooklyn, New York) registered his first two goals of the season for the Panthers in the 37th and 39th minute, giving BMCC the lead 2-1 when he knifed through two Kingsborough defenders to left foot one into the back of the cage and gave the Panthers a two-goal lead 3-1 with a right footed strike. The Panthers would take a 3-1 lead into halftime.
The story between these two this year has been the second half, and the Wave wasn't going to walk away quietly as Joseph Ludwig Jeffre scored in the 43rd minute to cut the deficit down to one 3-2.
Opensanwo was rewarded a penalty kick six minutes later in the 49th minute to provide some insurance but sailed his opportunity over the net. With new life, the Wave were able to even it up at three in the 71st minute courtesy of Ludwig Jeffre's second of the match and shock the Panthers in the 89th minute, taking a steal and booting a left-footed blast into the back of the cage for the winning goal to move KCC to the Region 15 semifinals.
Sophomore
Abdul Mumin Seidu (Bronx, New York) stopped five shots for the Panthers on the afternoon.
Mumin Seidu, who earned his second career NJCAA Division III Goalie of the Week honor a day ago, finishes his career 13-8-2 with 138 career saves, including five career double-digit save games with a career-best last year against Suffolk C.C. on October 13, 2022.
