New York, New York – After catching fire in October with four straight victories, the BMCC men's soccer team was presented with an opportunity against Kingsborough Community College on Thursday afternoon to capture the program's first CUNYAC regular season title in four seasons. The Panthers defined the moment presented to them using three second-half goals to upend the Wave 3-1 in league play and grab the program's first regular season title since 2018.
BMCC's fifth straight victory improves their record to 8-4-0 overall (3-1 CUNYAC), while Kingsborough Community College falls to 9-4-1 (3-1 CUNYAC). The Panthers have surpassed their win total from 2022 and are the top seed for the 2023 CUNYAC Community College Men's Soccer Championship with a chance to repeat for the first time since the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
After playing Kingsborough Community College to a 0-0 first-half tie, BMCC finally broke through in the 63rd minute when freshman John Guzman (Brooklyn, New York) cashed in for the game's first game from classmate
Amir Howard (Brooklyn, New York) to make it 1-0.
2022 Region 15 First Team selection and
CUNYAC All-Star Ademola Opesanwo (Lagos, Nigeria) would add insurance in the 78th minute from red-hot freshman
Mamadou Diallo (Conakry, Guinea), making it 2-0 before
Diallo would tack on his seventh goal in his last five games, and his team-leading tenth three minutes later in the 81st minute to make it 3-0.
Diallo is the first Panther player to reach the double-digit marker total since
Seydou Diallo (Brooklyn, New York),
2019 CUNYAC Player of the Year, did it with 11 goals three seasons ago. His goal total is tied for eighth all-time in a single season with
Klaudio Shala.
Sophomore Abdul Mumin Seidu (Bronx, New York) equaled his win total from last season with his sixth, making six huge stops for the Panthers in the match.
The Panthers are the number top seed in the CUNYAC Community College Championship for the first time since the 2018 season and look for back-to-back titles for the first time in five seasons against a familiar foe in Kingsborough Community College on Sunday, October 15 at 3 p.m. at Queens College. Ademola Opesanwo (Lagos, Nigeria) is the chef of this offense with a team and career-best eight assists and his 10 career assists are tied for fourth all-time in school history. He is also second with 22 points which is a new season high surpassing his 16 points from the 2022 season.
