Josanne Lewis Sets Single-Game Program Record For Kills To Lead Women's Volleyball To A Dramatic Five-Set Victory At Home

New York, New York - Freshman Josanne Lewis (Rochester, Minnesota) smashed a single-game program record 30 kills, with the final one to leave her hand mattering the most as it capped a miraculous five-set comeback victory (24-26, 22-25, 25-20, 25-22, 16-14) over Dutchess Community College on Saturday afternoon at BMCC Gymnasium. The exciting win improves the Panther's record to 2-2 (2-0 Region XV), while the Falcons dropped their first match of the season, falling to 3-1 (2-1 Region XV).

Despite facing an uphill climb down 2-0, BMCC refused to go away, including rallying from down 7-1 in the fourth set to take the lead and force a decisive fifth set. The Panthers trailed throughout the fifth set, spotting the Falcons a 4-0 lead early and trailing by four again 10-6 before closing on a 10-4 run to complete the comeback.

Lewis's new single-game mark of 30 kills surpasses Yolireisi Pichardo's single-game program record of 21 kills, which she reached twice during the 2018 season against Fashion Institute of Technology on September 8 and Rockland Community College on September 22.

Lewis, who also chipped in defensively with 24 digs, and sophomore Xheni Doci (Saluzzo, Italy) both recorded double-doubles, with Doci dishing out a game and career-high 38 assists to go along with 22 digs. Lewis and Doci also tied a match and team high with five service aces, while underclassman Albina Rugova (New York, New York) contributed offensively with eight kills. Doci also had six kills.

Emmanuella Aurel (New York, New York) led the BMCC on the backline registering a career and game-high 39 digs to go along with a career-best nine kills. Freshman Sarah Lee (Staten Island, New York) also chipped in defensively with 18 digs.

Dutchess Community College had three players finish the afternoon with double-doubles as sophomore Leah Vitiello led the way offensively with a team-high 16 kills and a match-best tied five service aces and defensively with 30 digs. Classmates Kathleen Brennan and Jordyn Wilsea were also big contributors, with Brennan throwing down 14 kills and registering 18 digs and Wilsea dishing out a team-high 37 assists and grabbing 12 digs.

Freshmen Lauren Siegel and Alexa Reinhard also contributed on defense with 19 and 16 digs, respectively.

The BMCC women's volleyball team will look for back-to-back victories for the first time this season when they take on CUNYAC opponent Kingsborough Community College on Thursday, September 22 at 6 p.m. For more information, please visit the BMCC Women's Volleyball Schedule Page.
