Women’s Basketball Edged By Kingsborough C.C., 56-51, On The Road; Araujo and Andrews Record 20-Point Efforts In The Contest

New York, New York – In a back-and-forth affair, the BMCC women's basketball team could not overcome a fourth-quarter surge and lost to CUNYAC foe Kingsborough Community College on the road Tuesday night, 56-51. As a result, the Panthers fall to 1-6 (1-1 CUNYAC) on the season, while the Wave pick up their first victory of the 2022 season, moving to 1-2 (1-2 CUNYAC).

Freshmen Amanda Araujo (Bronx, New York) and Demaris Andrews (Bayonne, New Jersey) both put up 20-point scoring efforts on the night and did it for the second time together this season. Araujo spearheaded the offensive attack draining a game and season-high 26 points and eight three-pointers, while Andrews registered her team-best third 20-point scoring effort with 25 points.

Araujo and Andrews also led BMCC on the glass bringing down a team-high seven rebounds apiece. Freshman Kayla Rodriguez (Brooklyn, New York) and sophomore Alicia Tomby (Berbice, Guyana) contributed on the glass with six and four rebounds on the night.

It was a competitive contest for all four quarters on Tuesday evening as both teams were tied at 24 at halftime and 36 after three periods of play. Kingsborough C.C. outscored BMCC 14-13 in the first quarter, and then the Panthers outscored the Wave 11-10 in the second quarter to go into the locker rooms even at the halfway point.

The Panthers and Wave traded 12 points apiece in the third quarter, and then Kingsborough pulled away in the fourth quarter outscoring BMCC 20-15 for a 56-51 victory.

Kingsborough Community College had two players with double-figure scoring efforts on the night, with Hagar Elwan dropping a game-high 19 points while Victoria Cook had a double-double with 17 points and 12 boards. Celine Hodge led the effort on the glass with a game-high 15 rebounds while dishing out a game-best six assists. Natala Reid-Small also snagged a game-best three steals.

The Panthers look for their second win of the season on Thursday, December 1, at 5 p.m. against CUNYAC foe Laguardia Community College at BMCC Gymnasium. For more information, visit the BMCC women's basketball schedule page.
