Suffern, New York - After a tough opener, the BMCC women's basketball team bounced back with a strong performance on the road Thursday night but still fell short 45-42 to Rockland Community College in Suffern, New York. The Hawks notched their first victory of the season improving to 1-1, while the Panthers fell to 0-2.
Freshman Demaris Andrews (Bayonne, New Jersey) made it back-to-back 20-point performances ringing up a season-high 24 points while tying for a game-high with five rebounds. Underclassman Amanda Araujo (Bronx, New York) and sophomore Alicia Tomby (Berbice, Guyana) contributed nine and eight points, while Araujo tied a game-best for rebounds with classmate Kayla Rodriguez (Brooklyn, New York) with five.
Baskets were tough to come by in the first half, but the Panthers made the most of it, leading 7-2 after one. Rockland would control the scoring in the second quarter, 13-12, but BMCC would go into halftime leading 19-15.
The Hawks outscored the Panthers 15-14 in the third quarter to lead by one, 30-29, before outscoring the Panthers 15-9 in the fourth, capped off by a game-winning three-pointer to end it with a 45-43 victory.
Jahmia Lavalasse posted a double-double with a game-high 27 points and 10 rebounds. Lavalasse and Rebekah Ramsey also both dished out a team-high three assists, while Mahogany Alexis grabbed a game-best 12 rebounds.
The Panthers will look to capture their first win of the season in their Region 15 opener on Saturday, November 12, against Nassau Community College at 1 p.m. in Garden City, New York. For more information, visit the BMCC Women's Basketball Schedule page.
