Watch: MBB Highlights vs. ASA Manhattan
New York, New York |Â The BMCC Men's basketball team suffered a tough Regional home loss at the hands of visiting ASA Manhattan, 81-72, on Saturday afternoon at BMCC Gymnasium. The loss ends the Panthers' three-game winning streak dropping their record to 6-6 (3-5 Region XV), while the Mad Titans improve to 8-6 (3-5 Region XV) with the victory.
Sophomore guard Terrance McBride (Brooklyn, New York) posted his second 30 point output of the season matching a season-best with a game-high 31 points, including 19 of them in the first half. McBride also drained team-high four three-pointers and tied for a team-best in steals with two and dished out three assists.Â
Three other players scored in double-figures for the Panthers, as sophomore Curtis Smith (Brooklyn, New York) drained 13 points on three three-pointers in his season debut to go along with a game-high seven assists. Freshman Malik Bentinck (Queens, New York) posted his ninth straight and team-leading twelfth double-double with 12 points and team-high 12 boards while freshmen William Brown (Brooklyn, New York) scored a season-high 10 points and Eric Massingale (Brooklyn, New York) brought down 11 boards in the contest.
Both teams traded blows over the first eight and a half minutes, with the game deadlocked five times and three different lead changes. ASA Manhattan constructed a 13-3 run to retake the lead and extend it to nine at 7:41 and 6:22, but BMCC staged a furious rally that saw them go on a 21-6 run--14 of the points coming from McBride--down the stretch and grab a 39-33 advantage at halftime.
In the second half, BMCC's advantage was brought back to six, the largest of the afternoon after two free throws from Brown at 18:08 made the score 43-37. The Mad Titans would string together a 10-2 run and cap it off with a three-pointer at 15:25 to retake the lead 47-45. Two three-pointers by Smith helped the Panthers go back in front, 48-47, at 15:11 and increase it to four, 51-47 at 14:39, before the Mad Titans struck from downtown to get the deficit at 14:16.Â
After Brown knocked a trey to get the margin back to four, 54-50, at 14:03, ASA Manhattan went on an 8-0 run to take the lead 56-54 at 10:22 and stretch the advantage to 58-54 at 9:17 on back to back layups. BMCC would get within two twice more on a pair of free-throws by Smith to make it 58-56 and a layup by Massingale at 8:40 to make it 60-58.Â
ASA Manhattan put together a 9-2 run over the next 5:31 to get the mark to 71-62 at 3:09. The Mad Titans never looked back, growing their advantage to a game-high 10 points on pair of free-throws with 38 seconds to play to make the score 79-69, before closing it out with an 81-72 victory.Â
