Volleyball Splits Regional Trimatch At Home On Saturday

New York, New York | The BMCC women's volleyball team hosted two regional matches on Saturday at BMCC Gymnasium. In the opener, the Panthers won a hard-fought, five-set thriller against visiting Westchester Community College, 3-2 (26-28,26-24,20-25, 26-24, 16-14), but fell to Rockland County Community College in straight sets, 25-22, 25-16, 25-16. With the split, BMCC's record moves to 2-3 (2-3 Region XV) on the season. 
 
Two Panthers recorded double-doubles in the match, as sophomore Nolverys Fernandez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) led all hitters with 14 kills to go along with 29 digs, both career-highs. Freshman Kaylin Nieves (New York, New York) dished out a match-high 22 assists with 15 digs.
 
Freshman Andecia Liverpool (Georgetown, Guyana) threw down six kills and classmate Danielle Singson (Jersey City, New Jersey) registered a team-best 31 digs. Fellow underclassman Laisha Ulerio (La Vega, Domincan Republic) also chipped in defensively with 21 digs, while sophomore Lauren Malcolm (Bronx, New York) fired a team-high six service aces to go along with six kills. 
 
The Vikings took the first set, 28-26, but the Panthers rallied to tie the match up with a 26-24 victory in the second set. Westchester Community College won the third set, 25-20, before BMCC took the fourth, 26-24, to set up a decisive fifth set. 
 
After both teams traded the first 16 points to start the fifth set, the Panthers used a 5-2 run to go ahead 13-10, before the Vikings scored four straight points to go back in front 14-13. BMCC recorded the final three points to take the game 16-14.

For Westchester Community College, sophomore Gabriela Faria led all swingers with ten kills and a team-best four blocks. Classmate Jurnee Reid posted 14 digs and seven kills, while freshman Stefania Rinaldi recorded a team-high 15 digs and eight assists to go along with a match-high 11 service aces. 
 
In the second match against Rockland Community College, sophomore Nolverys Fernandez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) led all hitters with seven kills. Fernandez also led the Panthers with 23 digs. Classmate Lauren Malcolm (Bronx, New York) contributed five kills in the match and freshman Kaylin Nieves (New York, New York) dished out a team-high nine assists. Underclassmen Laisha Ulerio (La Vega, Domincan Republic) and Quiana Baez (Queens, New York) helped defensively with 13 and 11 digs respectively.

For Rockland Community College, sophomore Anjali Sebastian led the offense with ten digs to go along with eight digs and two blocks. Classmate Elizabeth Minano dished out a team-high 13 assists, while freshman Simone Murillo led the defense with 13 digs.

The Panthers begin a five-game road trip next Saturday, Sept. 28 in a Regional tri-match against Sullivan County C.C and Orange County C.C. First serve is set for noon. For more information on the game, please visit the BMCC Women's Volleyball Schedule Page.
