Second-Half Surge Lifts BMCC Past Hostos in 2019 CUNYAC Final, 104-90

NEW YORK, N.Y. (Feb. 15, 2019) - In a game that featured 10 tied scores and 13 lead changes, No. 2 seed Borough of Manhattan Community College knocked off top-seeded Hostos Community College, 104-90, in the 2019 CUNYAC Community College Men's Basketball Championship Friday night at BMCC Gymnasium in New York City.

For BMCC, it is the Panthers' second-consecutive title and their third in the last five years. It is also BMCC's sixth CUNYAC Championship in program history and the fourth that it has won on its home floor.

"I'm just speechless," quoted BMCC Head Coach Tommy Guerin. "It's amazing for these kids. For our sophomores to go back-to-back and for our freshmen to experience this for the first time, it's unreal."

Trailing 64-56 with just over six minutes into the second half, the Panthers went on a game-changing 17-4 run in a near five-minute span to take their largest lead of the game to that point (73-68) at the 9:06 mark.

Senior guard Quran Dublin, who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, accounted for 12 of the points in the streak. He became just the third player in tournament history to eclipse 40 or more points in a single game, scoring 41 points on 14-of-20 shooting from the field.

"I don't think. I just play. It's about making the right play and right decision. I take the shots that I work on every day. That's all it is," said Dublin when asked about what it is like to be in "the zone".

Dublin then added: "There's so many memories at this school. So many memories on the court with these guys, this coaching staff. I am going to remember everything in this gym. I love this place. It was the best decision of my life to come here (to BMCC)."

Though Hostos managed to make it a one-point game soon after, BMCC shut the door on a Caiman comeback with a 16-5 run to extend its lead to double digits at 91-79.

Sophomore guard Alex Humphreys and sophomore forward Viktor Kovacevic each nailed a three in the burst. Fellow sophomore forward Raybon Fleming went a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

In the first half, Hostos jumped out to a quick 6-0 advantage, but neither team held more than a two-possession advantage in the opening 20 minutes. The Caimans would bring a slight 49-44 edge into halftime.

Humphreys went 5-for-9 from downtown in a 25-point night for BMCC. Kovacevic collected 13 points and nine rebounds. Fleming and sophomore center Ashan Adams scored 12 points apiece. Adams pulled down 13 rebounds, as well, for a double-double. As a team, the Panthers shot a spectacular 52.4 percent (33-of-63) from the floor and 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from beyond the arc in the win.

Sophomore guard Nakeem Hamilton led Hostos with 25 points on 5-of-9 shooting from three. Freshman guard Korey Williams amassed 18 points and four steals. Sophomore forward Sondai Downing chipped in 15 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore forward Gary Sylvester racked up 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
