Women’s Basketball Cruises To 45-26 Victory At Home Against Bronx Community College

New York, New York | The BMCC women's basketball team rolled 45-26 against CUNYAC opponent Bronx Community College on Tuesday evening at BMCC Gymnasium. With the win, the Panthers end a two-game losing streak and improve to 2-5 (2-1 CUNYAC), while the Broncos fall to 0-9 (0-3 CUNYAC). 

Sophomore Lauren Malcolm (Bronx, New York) recorded her second double-double of the season, as she dropped a team-high 13 points and pulled down 12 boards while swatting away a game-high two shots. Freshman Shyasia Preston (Far Rockaway, New York) hauled down career-high and game-high 20 rebounds, becoming the first became the first BMCC player since Maryam Toure (2017-18), to reach the 20-rebound plateau. Classmate Quiana Baez (Queens, New York) registered game-highs and career-highs in steals and assists with five and three, respectively. 

Baez also hit a new career-high in scoring with eight points in the contest, while sophomore Aniyah Davis (Brooklyn, New York) also chipped in with the same, and classmate Blossom Berruecos (Flushing, NY) had seven points.

The Panthers held Bronx Community College to just 15.3-percent shooting (9-for-59) and in single digits scoring for all four quarters, while also winning the battle of the boards, 54-41. 

BMCC jumped out to a seven-point lead in the first five minutes of the game, building up an 11-4 advantage to finish the first quarter. The Bronx got off to a strong start in the second quarter, scoring the first five points to get within two, 11-9, on a layup at 7:26, before the Panthers closed out the quarter on a 10-3 run to lead 21-12 at halftime.

BMCC went up by as many as 25 points twice, on a Berruecos three-pointer at 7:30 to make it 29-14 and a Preston layup at 5:34 to get it back to 31-16, before finishing with a 33-19 lead after three. The fourth quarter was more of the same as the Panthers outscored the Broncos, 12-7 to take the contest 45-26. 

For Bronx Community College, freshmen guards Jada Parker and Ashley Soto led all scorers with nine points apiece. Parker and Soto also posted team-bests in steals (3) and assists (2), while classmate Natalie Encarcion brought down a team-high 17 rebounds and scored eight points.

The Panthers will be back at it in two days on Thursday, Dec. 12th when they travel to Paramus, New Jersey, to take on Bergen County Community College. The opening tip is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. For more information, please visit the BMCC Women's Basketball Schedule Page.
