Watch: WBB Highlights vs. Dutchess Community College
New York, New York | The BMCC women's basketball team suffered a gut-wrenching loss to Regional opponent Dutchess Community College, 56-55, on Saturday afternoon at BMCC Gymnasium. With the defeat, the Panthers fall to 1-5 (1-3 Region XV), while the Falcons improve to 4-2 (3-1 Region XV) on the year.
Dutchess got the game-winner on a last-second free throw with 11 seconds remaining. After a Davis jumper made it 53-46 at 4:42, the Falcons staged a rally that saw them go on a 10-2, to tie it at 55-55 with 14 seconds remaining, after a foul three seconds later go one-for-two at the charity stripe for the victory.
Three Panther players scored in double-figures on the afternoon, with sophomore Autum Adams-Edwards (Brooklyn, New York) leading the way with a team-high 21 points and four three-pointers made. Classmates Aniyah Davis (Brooklyn, New York) and Blossom Berruecos (Flushing, NY) chipped offensively with 12 points and 10 points. Davis and Berruecos also registered team-bests in assists and steals with seven and three, respectively, while fellow upperclassman Lauren Malcolm (Bronx, New York) hauled down a team-high 11 rebounds.
After a Duchess layup at 5:14 cut BMCC's lead to 8-6, BMCC finished the first quarter on a 14-4 run capped off by a #13 three-pointer with 22 seconds remaining to lead 22-10.
The Panthers build their lead to 14, 24-10, the largest of the game early in the second quarter on an Adams-Edwards free-throw at 8:15, but the Falcons would outscore the Panthers 14-9 the rest of the way to cut the deficit to 29-24 at halftime.
Duchess scored the first four points to get cut the deficit down to three, 31-28. Then, BMCC put together a 15-4 run to stretch the lead to double digits for the third time by 11, 41-28, and later extended it to a 14-point margin, 46-32, the largest of the game on an Adams-Edwards jumper at 2:38. The Falcons would notch five of the last seven-point to make it 48-37 after three.
Dutchess dominated the fourth quarter, roaring out of the gate with a 7-0 run to get within four, 48-44, before BMCC scored seven of the next nine points to go back up by seven, 53-46. The Falcons would hold BMCC to two points over the final 4:42 and went 1-for-2 at the line late in the game for the 56-55 victory.
Two Dutchess players recorded double-doubles and hit the 20-point plateau on the afternoon, spearheaded by freshman guards Kamryn Hammand's game-high 25 points and 15 rebounds. Hammond also tied for a team-high with three assists, while fellow underclassman Starr-Aisa Hayes put up 21 points and ten rebounds. Hayes also snatched a game-high four steals in the contest.
The Panthers finish up the month of November against three-time defending CUNYAC champion and two-time defending NJCAA national champion Hostos on Tuesday, Nov.26 at the Swamp in Bronx, N.Y.
