New York, New York | Monroe College defeated the BMCC women's basketball team, 85-63, in Regional action Thursday evening at BMCC Gymnasium. With the loss, the Panthers fall to 1-4 (1-3 Region XV), while the Express improve to 4-1 (3-1 Region XV).
Two BMCC players scored in double-figures, with sophomore Autum Adams-Edwards (Brooklyn, New York) leading the pack with a game-high 23 points to go along with two steals, tying a team-best. Adams-Edwards did a majority of her scoring from the charity stripe, going 11-for-14 from the line, also a game-high. Classmate Lauren Malcolm (Bronx, New York) posted her first double-double of the season, hauling down a game-high and team-high 14 rebounds and chipping in with 11 points. Malcolm also tied a team-best with two steals in the contest, while Freshman Shyasia Preston (Far Rockaway, New York) gave out a team-high three assists to go along with nine rebounds and seven points.
Monroe College led 24-10 after the first quarter and displayed their defensive dominance early, holding BMCC to three points until a pair of Adams-Edwards' free throws at 5:25.
The Express took control of the game in the second quarter, going on a 16-4 run to extend their lead to 40-14, at 5:43. The Panthers responded with a 9-0 run of their own— five points coming from Blossom Berruecos (Flushing, NY) and layups from Preston and Adams-Edwards—while holding Monroe scoreless for the next 2:12 to cut the deficit down to 40-23. The Express scored five of the seven final points to end the second quarter with the score 45-25, in favor of the visitors at halftime.
Monroe College came out firing in the third quarter from start to finish, outscoring BMCC 24-11 for seven and a half minutes, to stretch their lead to 33, 69-36, the largest of the night. The Express scored four of the final six points to lead 73-38 after 30 minutes.
After struggling through the first three quarters, The Panthers finally hit their stride in the fourth quarter and outscored the Express 25-12, but still fell short 85-63.
Four players scored in double-figures for Monroe College, with freshman guard Quanisha Griffin leading the way with a team-high 19 points to go along with a team-best seven steals and four assists. Sophomore Monae Laing posted a double-double, with 18 points, and grabbed a team-high 11 boards. Classmates Arianna Wilder and Ashley Molina also contributed 16 points and 12 points, respectively.
