Watch: WBB Highlights vs. Bunker Hill
New York, New York | The BMCC women's basketball team was defeated in their season-opener, 63-53, against Bunker Hill Community College at home Saturday afternoon at BMCC Gymnasium. The Panthers fall to 0-1 on the season while Bunker Hill moves to 1-0.
Sophomore
Autum Adams-Edwards (Brooklyn, New York) knocked down a team-high 15 points and three three-pointers on the afternoon. Classmate
Aniyah Davis (Brooklyn, New York) posted her first double-double of the season posting 12 points and grabbing 11 boards, while fellow sophomore
Lauren Malcolm (Bronx, New York) pulled down a team-best 12 rebounds.
After both teams were tied three times through the opening five minutes of the game, BMCC finally opened up a 13-9 advantage. Bunker Hill held the Panthers scoreless through the final 3:17 and closed out the on an 8-0 run to take a 17-13 lead after one.
BMCC came out of the gates strong in the second quarter, putting together a 5-1 run and tying it at 18 on a
Malcolm layup at 8:25, before Bunker Hill put together a 14-4 run to build up a 10-point lead, 32-22, at 3:32.The Panthers finished out the second quarter on a 6-0 run, capped off by an
Adams-Edwards three-pointer with 13 seconds left to cut the deficit to 32-28 going into halftime.
After both teams traded the first five points of the third quarter, Bunker Hill went back ahead by nine later in the frame, 39-30, at 5:37. Both sides would trade the next fourteen points, with the Bulldogs outscoring the Panthers 14-9 to close out the third 46-37.
BMCC began the fourth quarter on a 13-5 run to get the game within two, 50-48, on freshman
Shyasia Preston's (Far Rockaway, New York) layup at 5:02, and then on a
Davis putback to get it within one, 51-50, at 4:13. However, Bunker Hill would take control after finishing the contest on a 12-3 run to win it 63-53.
Bunker Hill had two 20-point scorers on the afternoon, as sophomore Leidy Pena Guerrero led all scorers with 24 points, while classmate Adanna Hector put up 21 points. Guerro and fellow sophomore Lastarrsha Bradham both hauled down a team-high seven rebounds, while Bradham also forced a team-best three steals.
The Panthers begin a three-game road trip this Wednesday, Nov. 6, when they play to travel to Kingsborough Community College. The opening tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Brooklyn, New York. For more information, please visit the
