New York, New York | The BMCC men's basketball team fell short against NJCAA Preseason #9-ranked Bunker Hill Community College, 79-75, Saturday afternoon at BMCC Gymnasium. The Panthers record falls to 0-1, while Bunker Hill moves to 1-0 on the season.
BMCC had four players score in double-figures, as sophomore
Terrance McBride (Brooklyn, New York) led the way with 26 points, including 19 of them in the second half, and dished out four assists, tying a team-high. Freshman
Elvys Ceballos (New York City, New York) racked up 17 points, 12 of them in the second half, while distributing a team-high tied four assists. Classmates
Shakeem Reid (Brooklyn, New York) and
Malik Bentinck (Queens, New York) both added 10 points.
Bentick also hauled down a team-best seven rebounds and swatted a team-high three shots, while
Reid and classmate
Emmanuel Adenekan (Bronx, New York) had six rebounds and two blocks.
After six different lead changes and neither team trailing by more than two in the early stages of the first quarter, BMCC opened up a 14-10 advantage before Bunker Hill outscored them 21-9 over the next eight minutes to lead 31-23 at the 5:47 mark. Two McBride free-throws capped off an 11-2 run to give the Panthers back the lead at 34-33 with 38 seconds to go before Bunker Hill closed out the first half on a 7-2 run to take a 40-36 advantage into halftime.Â
Bunker Hill began the second half constructing two double-digit leads of 10, 46-36 at the 17:47 mark, and 11 at 15:24, before the Panthers dominated the next 7:19 of the game with a ferocious comeback, outscoring them 22-9 to tie it at 60, on a McBride jumper at 8:51 and take the lead 62-60 on a
Bentick layup at 8:25. After a
Ceballos three-pointer extended the lead to 65-60 at 7:02, Bunker Hill would mount to 6-0 run to retake the lead for good at 66-65 and fight off several Panther scoring charges late to take the game 79-75.
Bunker Hill had four players in double-figures, as sophomore Jessy Tavares led all scorers with 23 points and handed out a team-high four assists. Freshman Javonte Edwards knocked down 17 points, while sophomore Quincy Taylor posted a double-double hauling down a team-high 12 rebounds and scoring 12 points. Freshman Melvin Cuevas chipped in with 11 points on the afternoon. Â
