Panthers Roll Past Bronx Community College On The Road In Three Sets

Box Score

New York, New York |
The BMCC women's volleyball team cruised in straight-sets over CUNYAC opponent Bronx Community College, 25-14, 25-11, 25-18 on the road Tuesday night at Alumni Gym. With the victory, the Panthers snap a three-game skid and improve their record to 4-6 (2-1 CUNYAC), while the Broncos drop to 1-15 (0-4 CUNYAC).

BMCC fired a season-high 32 kills in the victory, with Sophomore Nolverys Fernandez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) leading the way with nine. Classmate Irina Kovalchuk (Yuzno-Sakhalinsk, Russia) equaled a career-high with five kills on a career-best .417 hitting percentage, while fellow upperclassman Lauren Malcolm (Bronx, New York) and first-year students Kaylin Nieves (New York, New York) and Alyssa Duran (Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic) and Vielka De Jesus Segura (Dominican Republic) all registered four kills apiece and three other Panthers had at least one.

Freshman Laisha Ulerio (La Vega, Domincan Republic) dished out a career-high and match-high 18 assists, while Nieves had ten assists on the night. Kovalchuck and Freshman Danielle Singson (Jersey City, New Jersey) also chipped in defensively with eight digs each.

BMCC held the Bronx to a -.133 hitting percentage for the match, including three kills total over the final two sets.

After both teams traded the first ten points, the Panthers scored eight of the next nine points beginning with a Bronco attack error and ending with a kill from freshman Andecia Liverpool (Georgetown, Guyana) and a service ace from Duran to put BMCC ahead 13-6. The Panthers finished the set, scoring 12 of the next 20 points for a 25-14 decision.

BMCC carried that momentum straight into the second set, limiting Bronx Community to just 11 points overall. After the Bronx scored three of the first four points, BMCC went on a 13-2 run to jump out to a 14-5 advantage. The Panthers held the Bronx to just six points the rest of the way and produced five of the six remaining points to close out the set, 25-11, on three straight kills
(two from Fernandez and one from Segura),  a service ace from Malcolm, and two Bronco attack errors.

The Broncos would not go away, however. After BMCC jumped out to an 11-5 lead, the Bronx battled back with a 9-4 run to get within three, 17-14, before the Panthers could take the advantage for good. The score got no closer than that in the final rallies, as BMCC registered eight of the last 12 points, and Nieves closed out the match with a kill of her own for the 25-18 victory.

For the Broncos, freshman Nicole Santos led all swingers with three kills, while Sophomore Alondra Mesa posted a match-high 20 digs to along with two kills.

The Panthers return home for a CUNYAC tri-match this Saturday, Oct. 12, against Kingsborough Community College and Queensborough Community College at BMCC Gymnasium. The opening serve is at 12 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. For more information on the matchups, by visiting the BMCC Women's Volleyball Schedule Page
