Volleyball Splits CUNYAC Trimatch On At Home On Saturday

New York, New York | The BMCC women's volleyball team hosted two CUNYAC matches on Saturday at BMCC Gymnasium. In the opener, the Panthers defeated Kingsborough Community College in four-sets (16-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-15), and fell to Queensborough Community College in consecutive sets 25-13, 25-11, 25-21. With the split, the Panthers record moves to 5-7 (3-2 CUNYAC), while the Wave fall to 5-8 (1-3 CUNYAC), and Tigers improve to 15-5 (5-0 CUNYAC).

Nolverys Fernandez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) led the way with her third double-double of the season, with a career-high 18 kills to go along with 16 digs. Freshman Andecia Liverpool (Georgetown, Guyana) put down a career-best eight kills and team-best three blocks, while sophomore Lauren Malcolm (Bronx, New York) contributed with four kills of her own to go along with two blocks. BMCC fired a season-best 35 kills for the match.

Freshman Kaylin Nieves (New York, New York) distributed a team-best 16 assists, while classmates Quiana Baez (Queens, New York) and Alyssa Duran (Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic) both posted season-bests defensively, with 21 digs and 20 digs, respectively. Classmate Irina Kovalchuk (Yuzno-Sakhalinsk, Russia) also recorded 11 digs in the match.

After the Wave took the opening set, the Panthers rallied to win the next three, tying it in the second set 25-22 and winning the third set 26-24, both in hard-fought battles. BMCC cruised to a 25-15 in the fourth set for the victory.

In the second match against Queensborough Community College, sophomore Nolverys Fernandez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) led all players with eight kills to go along with six digs. Freshman Andecia Liverpool (Georgetown, Guyana) posted a team-best three blocks, and sophomore Lauren Malcolm (Bronx, New York) threw down three kills on a .250 hitting percentage. 

Freshman Kaylin Nieves (New York, New York) dished out a team-high 13 assists, while classmate Alyssa Duran (Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic) led the defense with 11 digs.

For Queensborough, sophomore Chirdera Nwaghanata led all players with ten kills on a .714 hitting percentage. Sophomore Georgia Alexiou threw down eight kills, while freshman Bianca Brierre put up a match high .750 hitting percentage to along with six kills. Freshman Amira Durkovic distributed a team-high 29 assists, while sophomore Michelle Sosa led the defense with 21 digs.
