New York, New York | The BMCC women's volleyball team lost its Region XV First Round matchup against Queensborough in straight sets, 25-17, 25-14, 25-10, on Thursday evening at BMCC Gymnasium. The Panthers end their season with a 9-10 overall record, while the Tigers, who move on to face Monroe College Express in the Second Round, improve to 20-5.
Sophomore Nolverys Fernandez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) led all swingers with nine kills to go along with a team-best ten digs. Fernandez ends her BMCC career as the all-time leader in career digs with 373, and her 269 total digs this season were the second-most by a Panther in single-season history. She buried 194 kills on the year as well, good for fourth-most in single-season history, while also finishing sixth all-time in program history with 236 career kills and 84 career service aces.
Classmate Laisha Ulerio (La Vega, Dominican Republic) led all players with two service aces, and freshman Andecia Liverpool (Georgetown, Guyana) chipped in with two kills.
Fellow underclassman Kaylin Nieves (New York, New York) dished out eight assists, and Ulerio and freshman Danielle Singson (Jersey City, New Jersey) contributed on defense with seven digs and six digs, respectively. Nieves also led the way with 297 assists during her first season at BMCC, which was fifth-most in single-season and sixth all-time in program history.
The first set provided the best competition in the match, as it featured several early lead changes and several ties before Queensborough pulled away late to clinch the game, 25-17.
The second set provided a similar result during its early stages, as both teams battled early before the Tigers took a 13-10 advantage. Queensborough was able to take over down the stretch stringing together a 10-4 run en route to a 25-14 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Queensborough never looked back in the third set, recording nine of the first 11 points to start and cruised to a 25-10 victory to end the match.
For Queensborough Community College, sophomore Tiffany Garcia-Lawson led on offense with a team-high ten kills on a .625 hitting percentage, and classmate Paige Hughes put away nine kills, a tied for a team-high with two service aces. Freshman Biana Brierre had six kills in the match.
Freshman Amira Durkovic distributed a match-high 28 assists and tied a team-high with two service aces. Sophomore Michelle Sosa led the defense with 16 digs, while classmates Rachel Medina and Hughes both had 12 on the night.
