New York, New York | On Monday night, the #2 seed BMCC women's volleyball team earned a hard-fought victory over #3 seed Kingsborough, 3-1, in the 2019 CUNYAC Community College Conference Semifinals at the BMCC Gymnasium. With the win, the Panthers improve to 9-8 on the season and advance to the CUNYAC Conference Championship Match for a fourth straight season, where they will face #1 seed Queensborough.
Sophomore Lauren Malcolm (Bronx, New York) led the Panther attack with ten kills, while classmate Nolverys Fernandez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) and freshman Andecia Liverpool (Georgetown, Guyana) both put away nine apiece. Sophomore Laisha Ulerio (La Vega, Dominican Republic) fired a team-best eight service aces, with four of them coming in the second set.
Freshman Kaylin Nieves (New York, New York) recorded her sixth double-double, tying a team-high while dishing out 25 assists to go along with 11 digs. She registered 20 or more assists for the fifth time this year.
Fernandez also led the defense with a match-high 23 digs, while freshman Danielle Singson (Jersey City, New Jersey) and Alyssa Duran (Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic) both recorded 16 digs and 13 digs, respectively. Ulerio had 13 digs in the match.
The Panthers got off to a sluggish start in the first set, trailing by as much as 12, 18-6. BMCC finally turned it on down the stretch, putting together a 10-4 run to trim the deficit down to 22-16. Kingsborough would record the final three points of the set to take the first game 25-16.
The Panthers got off to a red-hot start in the second set, as they began with 13 straight points before building up leads of 16-2, 20-5, and later on 25-9 to even the match up at a game apiece.
After BMCC jumped out to a 13-6 advantage in the third set, Kingsborough strung together a 9-3 rally to cut the deficit to 16-15. The Panthers would go back up by six, 22-16, after a 6-1 run. Kingsborough fought back to within two, 23-21, but the Panthers got a kill and service ace from Singson to clinch the set, 25-21, and go ahead in the match, 2-1.
The fourth set would be a seesaw battle early, as both teams were tied three times- 5-5, 6-6,11-11 - before BMCC went on a 7-2 run to take the lead 18-13. After a subsequent 20-minute delay, Kingsborough would not go away, clawing back to within one at 23-22, before two errors and a service ace from Duran ended the match, 25-22.
For Kingsborough Community College, sophomore Kinga Kupras recorded a double-double with a team-high 14 kills to go along with 16 digs. Classmate Prishany Skinner also registered a double-digit kill performance with 11 in the match. Sophomore Daiana Garcia led the Wave on defense with 22 digs, while freshman Selina Berrezueta had 19 digs on the night.
