New York, New York | The BMCC women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking defeat Tuesday afternoon, squandering a two-goal halftime lead, in a 5-4 overtime defeat against Monroe College at Pier 40. With the loss, the Panthers dipped to 1-2 (1-1-0 Region XV) on the season, while the Express grabbed their first victory on the year, improving to 1-6-0 (1-3-0 Region XV).

For the second straight game, freshman Lisa Velasquez (Brooklyn, New York) opened the scoring, as she rolled in a shot from the penalty area in the seventh minute. Monroe College tied it up in the 14th minute after freshman Fatoumata Sanneh went coast to coast and fired home a chance to make it 1-1.

The Panthers netted a pair of goals two minutes apart to increase their margin by a score of 3-1. Sophomore Cindy Daza (Brooklyn, New York) buried her first tally of the season in the 24th minute and Velasquez's second marker off a beautiful cross from Kelli Wiggins (Oakland, California) in the 26th minute pushed BMCC further ahead 3-1. The Express would trim the deficit down to 3-2 in the 34th minute when sophomore Ilda Limon found the back of the net (from classmate Julia Hermoso) before Daza connected again four minutes later to extend the Panther margin back to two, 4-2, going into halftime.

After BMCC owned the first 45 minutes of action, Monroe was the stronger team in the final session. Early in the second stanza, neither team was able to find the back of the net, until the 63rd minute when freshman Ramatoulaye Diallo scored to get Monroe back within a goal, 4-3. Limon netted her second of the game in the 68th minute off a feed from Diallo to tie it at 4.

Both teams had opportunities to end it late, with Velasquez just missing wide on a free-kick in the 83rd minute and Diallo being denied point-blank in the 85th minute.

It didn't take long for the game-winner, as Diallo raced down 23 seconds into the extra session and slid a shot into the left pocket of the net to win it 5-4.

Freshman CadeJah McLaren (Mount Vernon, New York) made seven stops in the loss while Myrna Gregorie made three.

The Panther will try to bounce back next Tuesday afternoon, at home against FIT at Pier 40. The opening kickoff starts at noon. For more information, visit the BMCC Women's Soccer Schedule Page.
