New York, NY | With injuries up and down their roster, the Panthers entered Tuesday night's matchup against the Bronx Broncos shorthanded. Down a few key players, the team relied heavily on shooting guard
Alex Humphreys and the sophomore team captain responded by setting a new career-high in scoring with 32 points, but his scoring outburst would not be enough as the BMCC fell to the Bronx 87-81 in overtime.
In the first half the score would remain close with neither side able to pull ahead. In the final seconds of the opening half Humphreys stole the ball from a Broncos player and hoisted up a three pointer that found the bottom of the net as time expired. The Panthers five point halftime lead quickly dissolved when the Broncos went on a 15-1 scoring run to begin the second half. BMCC fought back into the game and evened the score on an
Ashan Adams layup with 11 minutes remaining in regulation. With neither team able to build a significant lead, the score remained close down the stretch. Trailing by three with under twenty seconds left on the clock, Humphreys connected on a deep three-pointer to send the game into overtime. The Broncos would pull ahead on the opening possession of the overtime period and held onto the lead to steal a win from the top seeded Panthers.
In addition to his 32 points, Humphreys pressured the Broncos all game resulting in 5 steals. Adams finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds, marking the seventh double-double for the BMCC center this season. Freshman
Damani Farquharson recorded his best performance this season, the Panthers forward tallied 7 points and a team-high 17 rebounds.
The Panthers will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Garden City to take on the Nassau Lions at 3pm.
