Weekend Recap: Mixed results in final BMCC doubleheader of 2018

New York, NY | The BMCC men's and women's basketball teams entered this weekend's doubleheader looking to close out the fall semester on a positive note with a win against Schenectady County. In the final contest before winter break the Lady Panthers fell just short in a 54-62 defeat, while the Panthers outlasted the Royals to win 71-53.

The women's basketball team got the action started on Saturday afternoon with a game that went back and forth between the two teams. With 11 lead changes, neither side was able to pull ahead until an 11-1 run by the Bulldogs in the final 5 minutes sealed the game. For BMCC there was a lot to be optimistic about going into the second half of the season as contributors came from up and down the roster. In all, 6 players finished with 8 or more points and the Lady Panthers defense held the opposition to shooting 30.9% from the field. BMCC freshman Daja Dennis-Humphrey continues to impress with 11 points, 15 rebounds and 5 blocks coming against the Bulldogs.

The men's game would play out in a similar fashion, the teams traded scoring runs with neither side able to pull away until the BMCC lead grew to double-digits with five minutes remaining. In a low-scoring affair, Viktor Kovacevic and Quran Dublin each contributed 16 points, with Terrell Fullerton and Ashan Adams recording 15 and 12 points, respectively. Following the win, the Panthers sit atop the Region 15 standings with a perfect 14-0 record and will look to continue their winning streak in January.

The BMCC teams will have a few weeks to rest before returning to action on January 5th for a tough matchup against Nassau Community College. The Lions currently rank 3rd in the region standings in both men's and women's basketball.
