New York, NY | With the postseason quickly approaching the BMCC Panthers volleyball and men's soccer teams had a chance to move up in the Region 15 standings on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers soccer team picked up a 2-1 win against the Westchester Vikings, while the Lady Panthers volleyball dropped a match to the Nassau Lions then rallied to beat the Suffolk Sharks by the narrowest of margins, claiming the 5
th set by a score of 16-14 to win the match.
Facing a tough Nassau Lions team, the Lady Panthers came out firing with a 25-11 victory in the first set, but the Lions would regroup and claim the next two sets before BMCC forced a 5
th set tiebreaker. Freshman
Yolireisi Pichardo led the team in scoring with 18 kills and 3 service aces.
Jennifer Chacon set her teammates up with 23 assists throughout the match, while libero
Nisha Rosario held down the defensive end with a team-high 26 digs.
Following the loss in the first match, Pichardo would continue her dominance in the second match with 20 more kills and another 3 aces. Meanwhile, Chacon had an excellent all-around performance with 10 kills, 4 aces, 3 blocks and 38 assists. A pair of freshmen helped stifle the Sharks offensive attack with Ashley Lasalle and Paola Sanchez recording 3 and 2 solo blocks, respectively.
After logging consecutive 5 set matches over the weekend, the Lady Panthers will have a much-needed break before they return to action to take on the defending champion Queensborough Tigers next Saturday.
In the men's soccer match,
Daouda Coulibaly followed up his hat trick performance on Wednesday by opening the scoring against the Vikings with a goal coming off of an assist from
Brian Ampaw. Five minutes later,
Edison Burgos passed to
Jahvaughnie Johnson in front of the goal and the sophomore forward found the back of the net. The Panthers conceded a penalty kick in the 79
th minute but would hold Westchester scoreless for the remainder of the match to get the victory. With the win, BMCC improved their record to 7-2, but will have a tough upcoming match against the Suffolk Sharks that will determine their seeding for the Region 15 tournament.
