New York, NY | The BMCC men's soccer team kicked off their regular season with a match against the Queensborough Tigers in a rematch of the 2016 CUNYAC Championship. After trailing early, the Panthers rallied back to claim a 3-2 victory over their conference rival.
In a physical match that produced 5 yellow cards and 28 fouls, things quickly got out of hand for the Tigers. During the 25
th minute, a Queensborough player was shown a red card after tackling
Brando Guzman in the box to give the Panthers a slight advantage for the rest of the match. Guzman cashed in on the penalty kick to even the score at 1-1. Playing a man down, the Tigers relied on defense to keep the score even through halftime and into the second half. But the Panthers would continue to dominate possession and eventually broke through with a goal coming off of the foot of freshman
Jahvaughnie Johnson, who took on three Queensborough defenders before finding an opening and placing the ball in the back of the net. The Tigers answered with a made penalty kick in the 75
th minute, but that scoreline would not last for long, just two minutes later Guzman connected on his second penalty kick of the match to give the Panthers the lead. BMCC defense would hold strong until the final whistle blew, allowing the Panthers to come away with their first win of the season.
Coach Seck and the Panthers will look to keep the ball rolling in their next match this Friday when they host the Monroe Express at Pier 40.
