Panthers Weekend Recap: BMCC Soccer Washes Out Wave in Doubleheader

Brooklyn, NY | With the fall season officially underway, once again the three Panther teams were all competing on Saturday afternoon. In the men's and women's soccer doubleheader at Kingsborough, both teams came away with huge wins over the Wave, but the Lady Panthers volleyball team lost in four sets to the defending CUNYAC Champions.

The women's soccer team claimed the first win of their season with a 5-0 victory over their CUNYAC opponent. Sophomore Derrieka Johnson broke into the scoring column this season with an unassisted goal in the 14th minute. Yosselin Alvarez assisted freshman Taylor Roach on a goal to bring the score to 2-0 as the teams entered halftime. The Lady Panthers would come out strong in the second half, with a goal from forward Skylyn Apolinar followed by Roach's second goal of the day. After assisting Apolinar earlier in the half, Ericka Ovillo found the back of the net in the final minutes of the game to cap the 5-0 blowout. BMCC will have one day to rest before they return to action against the Monroe Express on Monday.

The Panthers followed up the women's match with another blowout, BMCC would go up 5-0 in the first half and piled on in the second half to finish the match with an 8-0 score line. Aboubacar Keita, the 2017 CUNYAC Rookie of the Year, has continued to make strides in his sophomore season with BMCC. The Panthers forward opened the scoring on Saturday with a goal in the first 5 minutes of regulation, and it would be all BMCC after that. CUNYAC Player of the Week Jahvaughnie Johnson racked up a pair of first half goals, with Daniel Munoz and Abdou Ceesay piling on with one each before halftime. Once again freshman Brando Guzman was an integral part of the offense, the midfielder recorded three assists in the first half to help his team jump out to an early lead. With the game already decided, the Panthers did not let up, adding on to their lead with a goal from Lucas Musse on an Eduardo Ruiz assist. Freshman Deschanel Goulbourne would join in on the scoring in the 73rd minute when he cashed in on a penalty kick opportunity. Ceesay picked up his second goal of the match to finish off the Wave and give the Panthers their second CUNYAC win of the season. With the victory, the Panthers have earned a spot in the CUNY Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship match, and now will look to secure their place at the top of the regional standings. Their next match will be at Pier 40 on Wednesday when they take on SUNY Orange at 6pm.

On the road against a tough Queensborough Tigers team, the Lady Panthers struggled to get the offense going, with just two players reaching 5 kills as the team fell by a final score of 3-1. Despite dominating the Tigers in the service game (16-11 aces), the Lady Panthers finished with just 18 kills and 16 assists. Stela Vaso recorded 5 kills, 6 aces, and 3 blocks, while Sara Lazo added on with 5 kills, 3 blocks, and 6 digs. The Lady Panthers will look to rebound from this loss on Saturday when they take on SUNY Orange and Sullivan County at 12pm.
