New York, NY | On Friday night, the #3 seeded men's and #2 seeded women's basketball teams were both in action in the CUNYAC Final, but neither team was able to pull off the upset of the #1 seed in their respective brackets. The Lady Panthers fell to the Hostos Caimans 66-53, while the men came up short against the defending champion LaGuardia Red Hawks 82-69.
Several BMCC players were awarded for their performance during the tournament, with
Jason Mejia (Bronx, NY),
Terrell Fullerton (Brooklyn, NY),
Natalija Dubrovina (Belgrade, Serbia), and
Ashley Brooks (South Bronx, NY) being recognized with a spot on the All-Tournament team. After coming up short in the conference tournament, the BMCCÂ teams will look to rebound from the loss and begin preparing for the Region XV tournament that tips off on February 28th.
"There was a lot of parity in the league this year, and I think our team is playing their best basketball of the season right now, so I do believe we still have an opportunity to do something special"Â Panthers head coach
Tommy Guerin commented on his team's chances in the tournament.
Following a 16-5 regular season, Lady Panthers head coach
Ben Newberg has his team in a great position to make a run in the tournament after clinching home court advantage in the opening round. If either of the Panthers teams can run the table in the regional tournament, they will have an opportunity to compete in the NJCAA Tournament.
