New York, NY | The Lady Panthers took the court on Saturday afternoon to take on a pair of regional opponents in a tri-match against the Bronx Broncos and FIT Tigers. BMCC made quick work of the Bronx defeating the Broncos in straight sets before turning to FIT. Last year the Tigers finished their season with a dominant 15-1 record, including two wins over BMCC, but the Panthers flipped the script this afternoon. After stumbling in the first set, the Lady Panthers rallied back to win three straight sets and the match.
In the first match, an all-around team effort from the Panthers led to a dominating victory. With three players recording 5 or more kills, and an impressive 20 assists from
Yulia Kuzmina, BMCC coasted to a 3 set win with scores of 25-17, 25-14, 25-18.
The second half of the doubleheader began with the Tigers running out to a double digit lead in the first set, which they would go on to win 17-25. The Lady Panthers took the next two sets easily (25-14, 25-16), but the final set would come down to the wire. Down 17-21, the Panthers overcame the deficit to tie the match at 25 apiece, and with the momentum in their favor they scored the next two points to beat one of the top teams in the region.
Kayshawna Richardson led the scoring attack with 14 kills, while
Damali Prince and
Stela Vaso finished with 8 and 7 kills, respectively. Once again leading her team in assists, Kuzmina finished with a season-high 39 this match.
BMCC Volleyball will look to continue their undefeated start to the season when they take on the Hostos Caimans in a CUNY showdown this Thursday. The match is set to begin at 7pm at BMCC Gymnasium.
