Strong Second Half Pushes Panthers Past Broncos

New Rochelle, NY | For the fourth time this season, the Panthers matched up against the Broncos of Bronx Community College. After winning two of the previous three, BMCC was looking to continue their success against their conference rival.

The opening round of the NJCAA Region XV Tournament got off to a slow start for the Panthers, with nothing dropping for the offense, the Broncos jumped out to an 11-3 lead. Despite a perfect 4-for-4 start from three point range for Jamel Harris and a strong first half from Brandon Williams, BMCC continued to trail the Bronx for the first half. Down by 13 with four minutes remaining, the Panthers closed out the half with a 5-0 run to draw within striking distance.

The Panthers were a different team in the second half, just five minutes in BMCC had gone on an 18-2 run to lead the Broncos by double-digits. With six Panthers reaching 11+ points, BMCC coasted to a comfortable 86-70 victory to advance to the semifinal round.

Williams led the Panthers with 17 points, while Harris ended with 12. Sophomores Kenneth Coar (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Matthew Boyd (11 points, 10 rebounds) finished the game with double-doubles. With second chance points being a key factor to the Panthers win, Jonathan Jones came up big for the Panthers down the stretch, grabbing 8 rebounds while adding on with 16 points of his own. Second year player Dominek Tucker continues to impress in the postseason, the point guard came off the bench and racked up 12 points while recording 5 rebounds.

With the victory, the Panthers will take on the winner of the Sullivan-Rockland matchup tomorrow at 3pm.
