Panthers Fall to Rockland in Nailbiter

New York, NY  |  BMCC played host to a Region 15 double-duel Saturday afternoon, with FIT, Westchester, and Rockland playing two games apiece. The Lady Panthers made quick work of the 8-4 Westchester Vikings in the first match, but were unable to cap off the comeback in a 5-set loss to Rockland in their second match.

The Lady Panthers team outplayed the Vikings to take a 3-1 victory to start the day. On offense, Camille Pangalangan, Damali Prince, and Stella Vaso each recorded 6 or more kills throughout the four sets. Setters Crisneysi Mejia and Yuliya Kuzmina finished with 19 and 10 sets, respectively. On the defensive side, Vaso recorded a season-high 22 digs and 7 solo blocks, while three of her teammates finished with 13 or more digs in the rout of the Vikings.

In the second match, there was little separating the two sides in terms of quality, but Rockland managed to fight off two comebacks to escape with a 3-2 set win (20-25, 26-24, 18-25, 29-27, 9-15). Despite the loss, Vaso continues to impress during her freshman campaign, with 7 kills,16 digs, 2 aces, and another 7 blocks. Pangalangan also played lights out for the Lady Panthers, she finished the second match with 6 kills and 9 digs, while her teammate Crisneysi Mejia recorded a double-digit assist total for the 9th time this season. Jasmine Vidal had a remarkable performance for BMCC as she finished with 16 assists in back-to-back matches.

Following the doubleheader split, BMCC will shift their focus to the matchups next week where they will need to win in order to gain ground in the regional standings and carry the momentum into the postseason. They will be back in action this Thursday when they travel to FIT to take on the Tigers, a team they beat in their first matchup this year. Next match is set to begin at 6 pm.
