Panthers Pounce on Tigers in Season Opener

New York, NY  | The men's soccer team appeared to be in midseason form when they took the field on Thursday night against reigning CUNYAC champions, the Queensborough Tigers. With great team chemistry and goals coming from several different players, the Panthers cruised past the Tigers with a  final score of 5-2.

Prior to the game, Head Coach Modou Seck was vocal about his high expectations for this year. If everyone plays to their potential, he believes the Panthers can finish the regular season with a perfect 12-0 record. After impressive preseason workouts from freshman Serigne Kasse, Coach Seck was bubbling with excitement to see the forward showcase his talent in the home opener.

It did not take long for Kasse to show off his talent as he opened the scoring with a goal in the 2nd minute off a pass from teammate Ryo Koiso. The sophomore midfielder Koiso managed to make the most of his opportunities in front of the net as he scored the next goal on a rebound off the opposing goalkeeper. BMCC kept their foot on the gas, piling on another goal from freshman Adama Coulibaly in the 27th minute to take a 3-0 lead into the half. While they had the lead, the Panthers also picked up two yellow cards in the half, and would have to play less physical for the remainder of the game.

Queenborough responded in the second half with a quick goal in the 48th minute followed by a made penalty kick in the 63rd. With their lead slipping away, Panthers needed to respond quickly before things got out of hand. Freshman defender Peter Ceesay singlehandedly took the momentum back when he took a free kick from near midfield and sunk it into the back of the net. After this the Tigers looked deflated, allowing sophomore Jonathan Lopez to score on a breakaway with four minutes remaining.

Freshman goalkeeper Edwin Martinez was heavily involved with the Panthers defense as he recorded four saves and numerous clearances to halt the Tigers offense.

Come out to Pier 40 tomorrow September 9th to watch BMCC soccer as they return to action against the Globe Knights. Kickoff is set for 12:30.
