BRONX, NY | The Borough of Manhattan Community College baseball team fell just short in the second game of a four-game series with CUNY Athletic Conference rival Bronx Community College on Friday afternoon at Ohio Field in the Bronx. Bronx, who now possesses a 10-10 (8-2 CUNYAC) overall record, fought off BMCC—2-22 (1-9 CUNYAC)—to earn the 12-11 victory.  Â
The Panthers put up a three-spot in the first inning after catcher Wilson Aristy and outfielder Jason Villalona knocked in a run each with base hits. Second baseman Frandy Nunez scored the third run with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Bronx responded by scoring four runs in the bottom of the first, but the Panthers answered, scoring twice more in the top of the second. Center fielder Divine Hawkin advanced home after consecutive walks before right fielder
Ramon Nunez stole second, third and home to put BMCC up 5-4.
Panthers' pitcher
Kenny Berihuete walked in a run in the bottom of the second to tie the game at five, and at the end of the fifth inning it was the Broncos up 12-5.
But in the sixth, Bronx pitcher Albany Disla struggled to find strikes and walked in
Ramon Nunez. Third baseman
Reginald German knocked in another run via an RBI single with the next at bat, and
Frandy Nunez's RBI double two batters later ensured the Panthers would enter the seventh inning down four runs.
Brian Quintana took the mound for the Broncos in the seventh and walked in Hawkins six batters into the inning. After another pitching change, BMCC's
Terrance Biel pinch hit for Villalona with two outs on the board, but scored two runs with an RBI double to cut the lead to just one run (12-11). But Bronx's Francisco Ogando earned the save after
Frandy Nunez flew out to end the game.
Berihuete (0-5) allowed nine runs and struck out one batter for the Panthers in his fifth start of the season.
Frandy Nunez pitched 2.2 innings in relief and allowed three runs and also struck out one.
Ramon Nunez went 3-4 and stole an incredible six bases.
Frandy Nunez was 1-5 with two RBI's and Villalona was 2-4 with an RBI.
The Panthers will wrap up the series and their 2015 season tomorrow with a doubleheader against Bronx at 12:00 PM at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn.Â
