Suffolk Sweeps Baseball in Doubleheader, Series

The Sharks topped the Panthers 12-2 and 4-2 on Saturday

SELDEN, NY| The Borough of Manhattan Community College baseball team surrendered both games of a Region XV doubleheader to Suffolk County Community College on Saturday afternoon at Suffolk's Ammerman Campus in Selden, NY. The Sharks, who swept the series four games to none, claimed a 12-2 victory in game one before grinding out a 4-2 win over the Panthers in game two. BMCC falls to 2-18 (1-7) with the losses, while Suffolk improves to 13-7.

After a scoreless first inning, the Panthers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second when left fielder Gerson Perez's double  knocked in two runs. But Suffolk responded immediately, scoring four runs in the bottom of the second after pitcher Miguel Salas walked consecutive batters.

No runs were scored in the third, but Suffolk padded its lead in the fourth when Salas walked in three runs to put the hosts up 7-2. Five more runs for the Sharks in the fifth put the game out of reach and Suffolk claimed the 12-2 win.

Salas threw five innings for a complete game and allowed 11 earned runs and struck out three batters. Right fielder Christopher Garcia (1-3), first baseman Kenny Berihuete (1-2) and Perez (1-2) were the only Panthers to register hits.

In game two BMCC again jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, this time in the first inning. Designated hitter Wilson Aristy forced a run home after being hit by a pitch and third baseman Dimitri Madera scored shortstop Mario Padron with a sac fly.

Suffolk's Jesse Patriss' RBI single in the bottom of the second brought Suffolk to within one run, and in the bottom of the fourth the hosts knocked in two runs to take their first lead of the game.

Left fielder Terrance Biel and Garcia recorded back-to-back doubles with two outs in the top of the sixth, but Padron grounded out with the next at bat and Suffolk maintained its 3-2 lead.

Patirss would score off a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth after steal second and third and from there out the Sharks maintained their 4-2 lead.

Reginald German (1-1) earned his second start of the season in the loss and allowed three earned runs. Garcia led the Panthers offensively going 2-4 at the plate.

Up next the Panthers face the County College of morris in a non-region doubleheader on Sunday, April 19 at 12:00 PM in Randolph, NJ.
