SELDEN, NY| The #3 Borough of Manhattan Community College men's basketball team's 2014-15 season came to an end on Sunday afternoon at the hands of CUNY Athletic Conference rival Hostos Community College in the NJCAA Region XV D-III tournament in Selden, NY. The Panthers, who were defeated 69-62, won their previous 14 games and finish the season with a 27-4 record. The Caimans--who the Panthers beat three times this season, most recently in the CUYAC semifinal on February 18--came out flying, scoring 16 of the game's first 20 points and never truly allowed BMCC to run the table. Hostos would head into the break up 40-24 and eventually extend their lead to as much as 18 points in the second half. In the game's final minutes the Panthers gained momentum and cut the deficit to six points at 4:40 off a Kenneth Coar fastbreak. Inside a minute and a half the Hostos lead was down to three points (63-60), but it was too little too late for the #1 seeded Panthers.
Captain Joseph Ojo put in a gutsy effort and inspired his side when it was down big. His team-leading 17 points were vital in getting BMCC back into a game they appeared to be out of.
Kenneth Coar, who was named Region XV Player of the Year following the game, scored 14 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for his 16th double-double of the season. Coar was also named CUNYAC Player of the Year last week.
Sophomores Akeem Williams (four points, 10 rebounds) and Justin Manon (eight points) were named to the All-Tournament Team. Manon scored 30 points in the semifinal vs. Bronx on Saturday and averaged 18 points in the tournament.
Head coach Nolan Adams was named Region XV Coach of the Year as well.
The Panthers won the CUNYAC Championship on the February 20 and received votes in every National Poll this season except for the preseason poll. They finish the season at #3, which was their highest position all year.
We would like to take this last opportunity to thank our sophomores, #3 Elijah Bryant, #10 Justin Manon, #11 Joseph Ojo, #4 Kelvin Pickett, #32 Lowell Stevens and #33 Akeem Williams and wish them nothing but the best in the future, on and off the court.
