BMCC Sports: Weekend Recap

Volleyball Defeats Rockland, Soccer Stumbles Against Westchester

New York, NY  | It was a big weekend for Panthers sports, with all three of the teams hitting the road for their regional matches. The Women's Volleyball team picked up a win against Rockland while both Men's and Women's Soccer fell to their regional opponents.

Coming off of a weeklong rest since their last match, the Panthers volleyball team did not miss a beat when they returned to action on Saturday. Wai Shan Chan looked sharp in the first match, the Sophomore finished the game with 11 kills, 9 digs, 3 service aces, and 3 solo blocks to propel her team to a 3-2 win over the Hawks. Other statistical leaders for the Panthers were Kaina Bazard with 21 assists, Johanna Castro with 7 aces, and Captain Jennifer Santos who led the team defensively with 11 digs.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Chan continued to impress with 9 kills, 4 aces, and 4 digs. Meanwhile Kayshawna Richardson played phenomenal with 8 kills, 3 aces, 16 digs, and 4 solo blocks. But there efforts were not enough as the Panthers would fall to Westchester by a final score of 3-1.

The Men's Soccer team's road woes continued this weekend, they picked up their first loss of the season with a 0-2 result against Westchester. In a physical match against the Vikings during which the referee issued 10 yellow cards, the Panthers failed to find the back of the net despite launching 19 shots on goal. BMCC will look to rebound from this loss when they take on Suffolk County tomorrow night. The Panthers are entering into the toughest stretch of their schedule, 3 of their next 4 games will be against a top 5 team in the region.

On the women's side, the team struggled on offense as they were routed by FIT by a final score of 7-0. First time goalkeeper Angelika Kallio played the first half for the Panthers, in her debut she recorded 10 saves while allowing 2 goals. The team will be back at Pier 40 this Friday for their game against the Nassau Lions.
