PANTHERS WIN CUNYAC CHAMPIONSHIP!

The Panthers (10-1-1 overall, 3-0-1 conference) came into the CUNYAC Championship vs. the second seeded Caimans of Hostos Community College looking secure the 9th championship in school history and 2nd for Head Coach Afrim Lajqi.  After a tough 91 minutes and 23 seconds of play the Panthers came away with a 2-1 victory and the CUNY Championship.

BMCC got the scoring going early as Klaudio Shala(Sophomore, Albania), who was named CUNY Championship MVP, was able to find the back of the net in the 5th minute after receiving a spot on pass from Fernand Grisales(Sophomore, Colombia).  Both teams remained aggressive throughout the remainder of the 1st half, which saw the Panthers outshoot the Camains 10-3, and headed into halftime with the score remaining 1-0.  The Panthers held the lead until the 66th minute when Hostos' Forward Oumar Mbaye was able to score on a direct kick from 25 yards out and tie the score at 1 a piece.  The goal for the Caimans would stand as the last goal in regulation time as both goalies where able to make several saves to preserve the 1-1 tie.  The first match-up between these two teams this season saw a great game end in a 1-1 tie but this time with the CUNY Championship on the line a tie wasn't an option as we headed into overtime.  Panthers returning All-American Sophomore Anton Wesener(Italy) was able to secure the ball early in overtime and send a great crossing pass into the box where Freshman Forward Stephanos Hondrakis(Greece) was waiting to receive the pass and knew just what to do with it as he was able to find the back of the net for the game-winning golden goal just 1:23 into overtime.

With the win the Panthers secured the regular season and post season CUNY Championship and finished unbeaten in CUNY play on the season.  The Panthers will return to the field this Saturday, October 20th, at 12:00pm as they begin Region XV postseason play with an opening round match-up against Westchester CC at Pier 40!  Come out to support your Panthers as they will look to build off their CUNYAC Championship!
