New York, NY -  The BMCC Panthers Women's Soccer team made history in dramatic fashion, overcoming a two-goal halftime deficit to defeat the Nassau Community College Lions, 3-2, in overtime in the NJCAA Region XV Semifinals. Freshman sensation and CUNY MVP Jaqueline Barrera delivered the golden goal to complete the thrilling comeback and send the Panthers to the NJCAA Region XV Championship Game for the first time in program history!

The historic victory marked the first time the Panthers have advanced past the Region XV Semifinal round, continuing a remarkable season under first-year Head Coach Enrique Castillo.

The Lions came out firing in the opening half, putting the Panthers on their heels with two early goals to take a 2-0 advantage. Despite the early deficit, BMCC refused to back down. Freshman goalkeeper Mireya Contreras came up with several crucial saves to prevent Nassau from extending its lead and kept the Panthers within striking distance heading into halftime.

Trailing by two goals with their season hanging in the balance, the Panthers regrouped at halftime behind an inspired message from Coach Castillo and BMCC emerged for the second half looking like a completely different team.

The Lady Panthers immediately turned up the pressure, controlling possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities. Although their first few offensive attacks came up empty, the momentum had clearly shifted in BMCC's favor.

In the 66th minute, the Panthers finally broke through. Andrea Garcia delivered a beautiful long ball to CUNY MVP Jaqueline Barrera, who slipped her shot underneath the diving arms of the Nassau goalkeeper and into the back of the net. The goal cut the Lions' lead to 2-1 and breathed new life into the Panthers' comeback hopes.  With momentum firmly on their side, BMCC continued to attack.

After a brief rest on the sidelines, Garcia reentered the contest and wasted little time making another impact. The freshman midfielder delivered her second assist of the afternoon, finding fellow freshman Afrika Blackman, who buried the equalizer to bring the Panthers all the way back and even the score at 2-2!

The second-half statistics told the story of BMCC's remarkable turnaround. The Panthers completely dominated the offensive opportunities, out-shooting Nassau 9-2 over the final 45 minutes of regulation. What once appeared to be a commanding Lions advantage had turned into a deadlocked battle with a trip to the Region XV Finals on the line.

With regulation ending in a 2-2 tie, the two teams headed into overtime, where one golden goal would determine who advanced to the championship game.

And fittingly, it was the Panthers' CUNY MVP who delivered the unforgettable moment.

With both teams battling for the decisive goal, Ornela Pedabga played a perfectly placed pass into the path of a streaking Jaqueline Barrera. The freshman standout took one touch to settle the ball before unleashing an absolute rocket into the upper 90, leaving the Nassau goalkeeper with no chance!

Barrera's spectacular golden goal completed the incredible comeback, sending the Panthers and their sideline into celebration as BMCC secured a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory.

Barrera finished the afternoon with two goals, including the historic game-winner, while Afrika Blackman added the critical second-half equalizer. Andrea Garcia was instrumental in the comeback, recording assists on both regulation goals, while Ornela Pedabga provided the decisive assist in overtime. Between the posts, Mireya Contreras delivered key first-half saves that gave the Panthers the opportunity to mount their unforgettable rally.

For the first time in program history, the BMCC Panthers Women's Soccer team is headed to the NJCAA Region XV Finals where they will meet defending champion and #1 seed Suffolk County Community College.
