New York, New York - The BMCC men's soccer team utilized a pair of second-half goals to knock off NJCAA Division III No. 8 ranked Kingsborough Community College at home on a soggy Saturday afternoon at Pier 40. The Panthers defeated a ranked opponent for the second time this season after knocking off NJCAA Division No. 7 ranked Ulster Community College two weeks ago, improving their record to 5-3 (5-3 Region XV). The Wave dropped to 6-2-2 (4-2-2 Region XV) with the loss.
After both teams had felt each other out for the first 20 minutes, freshman Sebastien George had a glorious opportunity to open the scoring in the 25th minute. Freshman Brandon Leon (New York, New York) weaved past a couple of defenders who raced down the left wing and sent a cross onto George's right foot, but his shot was denied by a diving Kirill Syrogein of KCC to keep it scoreless.
The Wave notched the match's first goal in the 34th minute off of their second corner of the game. Kingborough's Andy Nebblett sent a right-footed cross into the penalty area, and Jesus Romero fought through traffic, picked up the loose ball, and blasted it into the low right pocket of the net to make it 1-0.
The Panthers kept fighting and responded with the equalizer in the 43rd minute. George's cross off a corner kick grazed the heel of Nikola Ivkovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and found the right foot of Idrissa Sanogo (Cote D'Ivoire, Ivory Coast), which rolled into the low left pocket of the net to tie it up at one going into the halftime break.
The Panthers controlled the action for most of the second half and had an opportunity for the goal ahead in the 50th minute, but freshman Aboubacar Barry's (Brooklyn, New York) left-footed boot just went wide. The Panthers got the go-ahead marker in the 63rd minute from George to make it 2-1. Ivkovic sent a corner into the box that grazed a Wave player's hand, awarding the Panthers a penalty kick to go in front. George buried his opportunity into the low right pocket of the net to put BMCC in front for the first time on the afternoon. Leon would add insurance for the Panthers in the 89th minute, putting home a loose ball to make it a 3-1 result, which would remain until the final whistle, giving the Panthers another big-time Region 15 victory.
El Momar Coundoul (Bronx, New York) picked up his fifth victory of the season and made four stops. Giovanni Carreno took the loss for the Wave, playing 60 minutes and relieving starter Kirill Syrogein late in the first half.
The Panthers will look for two straight wins and remain perfect at home this season on Tuesday, October 1, against Region 15 opponent Dutchess Community College at 12:30 p.m. at Pier 40. For more information, visit the BMCC Men's Soccer Schedule.
