Jaylynn Mateo’s Career-High 17 Kills Propels BMCC To Thrilling Five-Set Road Victory Over Union C.C.

Cranford, New Jersey - The BMCC women's volleyball team overcame every challenge thrown their way on Saturday afternoon, outlasting Union County College for a thrilling five-set victory (16-25, 25-21, 28-26, 12-25, 15-7) on the road in Cranford, New Jersey. The Panther's second straight victory improved their record to 4-1, while the Owls dropped to 2-5.

Freshman Jaylynn Mateo (Brooklyn, New York) spearheaded the Panther's offense, uncorking a career-best 17 kills and placing a team-high three service aces. Classmate Kavana Liburd (Queens, New York) posted her second 30-assist performance and first double-double of the season with a team-best 32 assists and 14 digs. Freshmen Andrea Perez-Guzman (Brooklyn, New York) and Ishinay Lennon (Bronx, New York) contributed with six and five kills, while sophomore Emmanuella Aurel (Port Au Prince, Haiti) had five kills of her own.

Aurel registered a career and game-best six blocks on defense, while Mateo also had a career-high in blocks with two. Aurel's effort moved her into 10th all-time in school history with 37 career blocks, surpassing Collette Dragon's and Kerrel Garraway's mark of 36 career digs.

After dropping the first set 25-16, the Panthers won the second and third sets 25-21 and 28-26 before Union County College dominated the fourth set 25-12 to force a fifth set. The Panthers wouldn't let last weekend's result repeat itself in the fifth set, rolling to a 15-7 win to take the match three games to two.

The Panthers will look to extend their winning streak to its largest of the season, three, this coming Thursday, September 26, at 6:00 at home in BMCC Gymnasium against Region 15 foe Fashion Institute of Technology. For more information, visit the BMCC Women's Volleyball Schedule Page.

Notables
Emmanuella Aurel (Port Au Prince, Haiti) is the program's all-time leader with 463 career digs and moved into 10th all-time in program history with a career-high six-block effort on Saturday against UCC. Aurel also ranks 11th all-time in career kills with 178 and 14th and 15th in school history with 69 career service aces and 140 career assists.
- Freshman Kavana Liburd (Queens, New York) leads the Panthers with 121 assists, which is also 16th all-time in school history.
