New York, New York – The 2022 CUNYAC Community College Champion BMCC women's volleyball team kicked off their 2023 campaign on Thursday evening at BMCC Gymnasium. Union County College came into the match undefeated and left it the same, defeating the BMCC in straight sets. The victory improves the Owls record to 3-0 on the season while the Panthers drop to 0-1.
BMCC was led offensively by freshman
Andrea Richino (New York, New York), who smashed a team-best four kills, while sophomore
Cheyenne Gray-Taitt (Harlem, New York) and freshman
Keyanna Irving (Queens, New York) contributed three kills apiece. Freshman
Silvia Chen (New York, New York) dished out a team-best 10 assists and teamed up with sophomores
Garyana Altidor (Queens, New York) and
Gray-Taitt to place a team-high two service aces apiece.
Altidor also led the Panthers defensively corralling a team-best and career-high 20 digs.
The Owls jumped out to two four point leads in the opening set of 9-5 and 13-9. The Panthers would roar back with a 6-2 run to tie it up at 15 before Union College went on a 10-2 run to end the first set 25-17. After taking the second set 25-16 the Owls rolled to a 25-12 result in the third to take the match.
The Panthers will look to grab their first victory of the season over the weekend during their first double dual of the season in CUNYAC play on Saturday September 9 at 12 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. against Hostos Community College and Bronx Community College at BMCC Gymnasium.
