Brooklyn, New York – The BMCC women's basketball team stepped off the bus in Brooklyn on Tuesday night with the opportunity to go to the program's first CUNYAC Championship in four seasons and turn around the momentum of a program that only played four games a season ago. Queensborough Community College brought the kitchen sink at the Panthers in the CUNYAC CC Women's Basketball Semifinals, but after 40 minutes, BMCC was the one left standing.
BMCC finally grabbed control in the fourth quarter utilizing a 10-0 to pull away with a 52-43 victory on Tuesday night at Kingsborough Gymnasium. As a result, the Panthers have secured a spot in the conference championship game for the first time since 2018-19, improving to 6-15, while Queensborough drops to 7-11 with the loss.
The freshman tandem of
Demaris Andrews (Bayonne, New Jersey) and
Emily Kennedy (Brooklyn, New York) led the way for the Panthers on the night, with both dropping a game-high 25 points.
Andrews recorded her team-leading seventh double-double and eighth 20-point game while tying a team-high with classmate Kayla Rodriguez (Brooklyn, New York) with 10 rebounds.
Kennedy put up her fourth straight game with 20 or more points and her fifth 20-point effort of the season to go along with a game-high four assists.
Kennedy also led BMCC defensively with a game-best six steals, and sophomore
Alicia Tomby (Berbice, Guyana) and
Rodriguez contributed three steals each.
The Panthers tied a season-high on the defensive side of the ball, snatching 15 steals while scoring 31 points off of 31 forced Queensborough Community College turnovers. BMCC's forced turnover total was second most on the season, while their 76.9% free throw shooting percentage (10-13 FT) was also second best this year. The Panthers also outscored the Tigers in the paint 30-20.
Queensborough Community College had two players in double figures, and one had a double-double in the contest. Isabella Casey led the way for the Tigers with a team-high 19 points and two assists, while Division III Player of the Week Nayla Walters hauled down a game-high 17 rebounds and scored 13 points. Brianna Griffiths turned away a game-high five shots, and Walters gobbled up a team-best three steals.
The Panther's next test will be in the 2023 CUNYAC CC Women's Basketball Championship this Friday, February 17, against eight-time conference champion Hostos Community College from Kingsborough Gymnasium in Brooklyn, New York. For more information, visit the
