New Rochelle, New York – Freshman
Emily Kennedy (Brooklyn, New York) continued her strong start to 2023, going off for a career-high 22 points, but the BMCC women's basketball team fell to Monroe-Bronx, 79-39 at the Monroe Athletic Complex on Tuesday. The Express's second straight victory improves their record to 12-5 (7-0 Region XV), while the loss drops the Panthers to 2-11 (2-8 Region XV).
Kennedy's game-high 22-point effort was her second straight 20-point performance, while classmate
Demaris Andrews (Bayonne, New Jersey) made it back-to-back double-doubles, hauling down a game-high 10 rebounds and scoring 14 points in the contest. Andrews also dished out a team-best two assists while joining classmate Kennedy with one block each.
The Panthers grabbed the first bucket of the game in transition against Region 15's top team on a
Kennedy layup at 9:09 to make it 2-0 before the Express took control of the opening period with an 11-1 run to extend their lead to eight, 11-3 at 4:58 on an Aleah James layin. After a
Kennedy layin at 4:33 off an
Andrews feed from cut the Monroe-Bronx lead to six, 11-5, the Express recorded 15 of the final 16 points of the first quarter to lead 26-6 at the horn.
The second quarter would be BMCC's best of the game as they shot 38.5% in the period (5-13 FG) and scored three of the first five points to cut the deficit down to 19, 28-9 at 8:32 when
Kennedy went 1-for-2 at the line but could not get any closer as the Express outscored them 17-10 down the stretch to lead 45-19 at halftime.
Monroe-Bronx kept the narrative the same in the second half leading 65-30 after three and grabbing their largest lead, 41, on a Fatima Thompson jumper with 20 seconds left en route to a 79-38 victory.
Eleven different Monroe-Bronx players found the scoresheet led by a team-high 17 points from freshman Sierra Jones while sophomores Crystal Traverso and Janay Legagneur scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. Sophomore Nyeira Spady dished out a game-best five assists and turned away a game-high three shots, while classmate Maria Negron corralled a team-high nine boards, and freshman Aleah James snatched a game-best three steals.
The Panthers will look to recapture their winning ways on Saturday, January 21, against Raritan Valley C.C. at noon at BMCC Gymnasium. For more information, visit the
