Second Half Panther Rally Falls Short

New York, New York – Freshman Demaris Andrews (Bayonne, New Jersey) put up her team-leading fifth 20-point game of the season, with all of it coming in the second half, but BMCC women's basketball couldn't erase a 16-point halftime deficit. The Panthers gave an excellent second-half effort but came up short 48-43 to CUNYAC foe LaGuardia Community College on the road Tuesday night in Long Island City, New York. The victory improves the Red Hawk's record to 2-8 (2-3 CUNYAC), while the loss drops the Panthers to 1-10 (1-4 CUNYAC).

Freshman Emily Kennedy (Brooklyn, New York) was the second of the five BMCC starters to score in double figures with 15 points in the contest, her second of the season, while classmate Yisneily Morales (Bronx, New York) ripped down a team and career-high nine boards. Andrews missed her team-leading third double-double by two rebounds with eight on the night and tied for a team-best in steals with Morales as both snatched four apiece, while Kennedy had three steals on the night.

After being held to single digits scoring in the first two quarters, the Panthers put together a solid second-half response facing a 29-13 halftime deficit.

BMCC outscored Laguardia C.C. with a team-best 19-point third quarter to cut the Red Hawks lead to seven, 39-32, after three-quarters of play. BMCC got within two, 45-43, on a Kennedy layup with 1:30 remaining and had a chance to get it to that mark, but Kennedy missed a layup with 54 seconds to go and Morales with 29.3 seconds remaining as the Panthers could not inch any closer dropping the game 48-43.

Brianna Edwards paced the Laguardia Community College offensive and defensive attack with a double-double scoring a team-high 18 points and ripping down a game-high 15 rebounds. Sydney Kenward scored 14 points in the contest, while Kaylee Paneto and Talikia Taylor took down 11 and 10 rebounds on the night. Edwards and Shemiah Sealey helped on defense with a team-best two steals each.

The Panthers return to action in the New Year on Saturday, January 14, against CUNYAC opponent Kingsborough Community College at BMCC Gymnasium. For more information, visit the BMCC women's basketball schedule page.
