New York, New York | The 2019-20 BMCC women's basketball season came to an end on Tuesday night, as the #3-seeded Panthers fell to #2 seed Kingsborough, 45-34, in the semifinals of the CUNYAC CC Women's Basketball Championships at BMCC Gymnasium.
Sophomore Autum Adams-Edwards (Brooklyn, New York) led all Panther scorers with a team-high 11 points to go along with four rebounds and three steals. Adams-Edwards closed out her BMCC career with a fifth straight double-digit scoring performance for her team-leading twelfth and 23rd of her career while finishing ninth in school history with 476 career points, passing Karina Ortega.
Classmate Lauren Malcolm (Bronx, New York) snagged a team-best 14 rebounds and four steals to go along with seven points. Malcolm concluded her Panther career with a fourth straight double-digit rebounding effort for a team-best thirteenth time this season and for the 27th time in her career. The Bronx native had a record-setting sophomore season with 233 rebounds and 12.2 rebounds per game while moving into third all-time in Panther history with 420 career rebounds, passing Chidinma Ogueri.
Freshman Shyasia Preston (Far Rockaway, New York) dished out a team-high two assists to go along with eight rebounds and three steals while scoring six points.
After both teams mustered up just eight points over the first four minutes of the opening quarter, Kingsborough constructed an 8-0 run and held the Panthers scoreless for the next four to extend their lead to 12-4 before BMCC scored the final five points to trail 12-9 at the end of the quarter.
Scoring was tough to come by in the second quarter as both teams scored just eight points apiece. After Kingsborough built their lead to eight, 19-11 at 5:03 mark, BMCC finished with the final five points capped off by a Preston layup with 55 seconds left to close within three, 20-17 going into the halftime break.
The Panthers started the third quarter off strong in with the first four points, to tie it at 20 on a Quiana Baez (Queens, New York) three-pointer at 9:01 and go in front for the first time 21-20 after Melanie Ozoria (Far Rockaway, Queens) went 1-for-2 at the line. Kingsborough used a 14-2 run over the next six minutes to increase their lead to its largest point of the evening, 11, 34-23, before BMCC followed up with four of the final six points to get the deficit down to nine, 36-27 going into the last quarter.
After Preston's jumper to open the fourth quarter made it a seven-point game, 36-29, at 9:00, the Wave went on a 9-3 run to bring the advantage back to their biggest, 11, 43-32 on a layup at 5:11. Kingsborough kept their game-high 11-point lead down the stretch to seal a 45-34 victory and a date with #1 seed Hostos in the CUNYAC Community College Finals on Friday night.
For Kingsborough Community College, freshman Tiffany Bogle put up a double-double with a game-high 27 points and 15 rebounds. Classmate Magdalena Kupras chipped in with 14 points in the contest while recording a game-high eight assists and six steals.
The Panthers ended the 2019-20 campaign with a 5-15 overall record, including a 4-4 mark in CUNYAC action, while qualifying for their fifth straight appearance in the conference tourney.
Notables:
- Lauren Malcolm (Bronx, New York) also finished her sophomore season with a career-best in steals (50) and tied for seventh in BMCC history with 80 for her career. She also posted a career-best 8.8 points per game and passed Ashley Duplan for 16th in school history in scoring with 316 career points.
- Autum Adams-Edwards (Brooklyn, New York) also concludes her BMCC career tied for 12th in school history with 76 career assists and seventh overall with 52 career three-pointers made.
- Shyasia Preston (Far Rockaway, New York) swatted away a team-high eight blocks this season and finished second on the team in rebounding (172 rebounds-9.1 rebounds per game). Her eight double-digit rebound games and three double-doubles were also second on the team.
- Preston also moved into a tie for 16th in BMCC program history with Alexis Hart for total rebounds (172).
